Anyone ever heard Redd Foxx's standup?  I got two of his LPs as a kid.  Filthy funny.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Did Gene and Rowan do stand-up? I agree both are hilarious, but I've never heard anything about either performing stand-up comedy.

In his prime, nobody came close to Richard Pryor.

Billy Connolly.

He's not really a comedian, he's more a guy that can talk about anything and it's funny.

Years ago he was on Larry King and started talking about the guy in the beginning of the 1900's that was famous for his flatulence. He called himself a Rectal Yodeller and was really famous in France because he would come on stage and fart La Marsellaise.
Just the way Connolly described it was very funny.

they locked up the wrong man."

The guy you're thinking of was La Petomane:

Now why did I know that...?

Good to see Robin Williams getting a mention or 2; there was life before his often hideous film career - if you get to see the film of him on stage at the NY Met Opera House, I defy you to hear all the jokes in one go - I always end up curled in a ball trying not to wet myself with laughing; I think I had to see it 2 or 3 times before I managed to see all the jokes. Absolute classic observational standup

There are a few very good standups around at the moment (Bill Bailey for one), but am I the only one who can watch an entire Ricky Gervais routine without so much as a titter?

If any of you can get hold of Woody Allen's stand up performances from the club circuit in 60's New York, they are well worth hearing...extremely funny....
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Would you like to watch TV, or get between the sheets, or contemplate the silent freeway, would you like something to eat?

Have you seen the film starring Leonard Rossiter in the title role?

My favourite comedian is Billy Connolly. I was watching him on TV recently (I think it was part of his World Tour of Australia) and he was talking about Frank Zappa. Connolly said he was a massive Zappa fan and once lived near him, but was too awestruck to go and introduce himself. After Zappa died, Connolly met Zappa's widow and was told that Zappa was a huge fan of Connolly!

you all can stone me but I liked Dane Cook before he started appearing in awful moviesEmbarrassed...I thought he had a lot of energy and enthusiasm despite not being a gifted writer.

and I forgot to mention Mitch Hedberg, what a huge loss he was....KING of one-liners among more recent comics, better than Steven Wright IMO.

See? Right there you show why people don't like him. Energy is wonderful (see Bill Hicks, Lewis Black, and Sam Kinison when they get riled), but without actual humor behind them, you get a loud jackass. Dane Cook is the Michael Bay of comedy.

Oh, writing this just made me remember Sam Kinison. How has he not been mentioned yet?
