Porcupine Tree seem far more progressive to me. Dream Theater are a 'prog metal' band. Everything they do will be set against a back drop of heavy metal. That in itself will stifle any true progression, imo.
The contrast between the hard rock and the ambient soundscapes on Porcupine Trees work, and the fact that they have 'progressed' and transcended styles over the last couple of decades makes them more prog by fefault, regardless of who you happen to think writes better songs.

Dream Theater... and I am not a fan. ... by a mile. Dream Theater may be w**kers in search of melody... but they were far more progressive than PT. PT is some great music... but not exactly the most progressive I've ever heard. At least we an credit DT for defining an established genre of progressive rock.

Micky, YOU, voting for DT in a poll ?
RAFF, GET IN HERE, MICKY IS GUILTY OF HERESY !!!

I know ... However, I'm afraid he's right in this respect, and I have to agree with him. This doesn't mean I prefer DT to PT, far from that.... I listen to PT quite often, while I've never been able to listen to anything by DT but I&W more than twice. However, I think PT's progressive quotient (especially if we are talking of the band's sound nowadays) is rather exaggerated. Now, if the poll question had been, "which is better?", of course I'd have voted for PT. As things stand, I won't vote for either one - just express my opinion.

I don't really like either but Porcupine Tree, Dream Theatre are way too cheesy for my tastes.

Well....
If you consider one single track, I'd have to say that DT are proggier : more variations, more rythm changes, etc...
But if you consider a whole album or the whole discography, I'd go with
PT, who progress way more than DT who can't escape their sound. I'd
even quote a critic who said (about another band though) that "they
have become their own tribute band"... Their latest album clearly shows
that. Nothing new, an impression of deja-vu all along. Whereas PT have
never had two albums of the same taste, and they continue to prove it
with their latest 2007 releases (NR & FOABP). So my vote goes to PT.

Porcupine Tree by a million miles. DT are proggier, but a lot cheesier.

These bands have nothing in common. Oddly enough I'm listening to
Systematic Chaos now. Anyway PT is my favorite band of all time,
and are definitely much better songwritters. Technically, DT are better
musicians but PT are something very unique and beautiful.

This is not a question of which is your favorite, but which is more progressive. Mine goes for DT.

What a stupid thing to say. I am an avid guitar player and Petrucci reminds me never to lose my restraint!

As great as PT is on disc, live they're not so good... I was there this wednesday in Orlando... they don't put the great performance that other lesser bands put...no solos, no interaction, Wilson makes mistakes (he forgot the lyrics of Blackest Eyes) and too many unknown songs..... That fact alone makes my (already made) decision even a stronger one : DT!

To me, PT is more progressive than DT. |
If this isn't a case of the pot calling the kettle black....
That said, I'd still vote for PT.

They were pretty decent on that tour when they opened for Yes.

I'm just talking about what I saw TWO days ago.... the live show they put is decent... only when they played Anesthesize they really rised above a good performance... but they didn't sound as PERFECT as other performances I've seen...

You can't be "more" prog.
It's like being dead. If you died of a disease right now, and your heart stopped, you'd be dead. If I shot you then, you wouldn't be "more" dead, 'cause you were already dead.
So, in short, Porcupine Tree is WAY more progressive than DT.

Micky, schizoid was saying that Yoel's FRIEND said a stupid thing, not Yoel himself. But on that topic, Porcupine Tree have an equal or greater amount of prog-iness, just not always technical-instrumental-high strung-rhythmically, but in atmosphere, scale, depth, and so on. Just because DT have more rhythmic complexity, doesn't make then "more" progressive.

You got that wrong, I was talking about his friend, not him. Yoel is innocent! I think his friend is not a very smart person for the whole guitar thing.
