I've heard a lot of Italian Prog, from the famous to the obscure, and to me there is no doubt that Le Orme is the very best of the lot. They've made a lot of beautiful music.
Second would be Osanna. The Celeste album is also one of my top Italian records, as is the first Reale Accademia di Musica album. Battiato and Claudio Rocchi are the best of the solo artists, I think. The worst Italian stuff I've heard would have to be Jacula/Antonius Rex...I really don't understand what that guy was trying to accomplish. ItalProg was the deepest scene in the 70s, as far as quality goes. It's amazing that a country with such a small population could churn out so many great bands. |

For ANDREW: Best your lists and I believe that should be held in big consideration from the team of Italian Prog (test to write to Andrea Cortese). As for BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE is the continuation of the GARYBALDI to them time continuation of the GLEEMEN.
If FLEA ON THE HONEY/ FLEA/ ETNA a sole band are considered then here there is an even more important mistake because the previous case is a mistake!!! (FLEA ON THE HONEY/ FLEA/ ETNA are not considered really a one band if it wanted component a biography in historical sense, while the case of GLEEMEN/ GARYBALDI/ BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE)

I had sent an e-mail time does to urge their inclusion means the address [email protected] but to all today not still I saw their inclusion.
For greatet info, meanwhile experienced to visit the following site: www.italianprog.com/it/a_crystals.htm (in Italian) or www.italianprog.com/a_crystals.htm (in English)

GLEEMEN and GARYBALDI have the same line-up:
- Bambi Fossati: guitars, vocals
- Lio Marchi: keyboards
- Maurizio Cassinelli: drums, vocals
- Angelo Traverso: bass
BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE has a differnt line-up:
- Bambi Fossati: guitar, vocals
- Maurizio Cassinelli: drums
- Ramasandiran Somusundaram: percussions
- Roberto Ricci: bass
FLEA ON THE HONEY changed his name into FLEA in 1972 and then into ETNA in 1975 but keeping the same line-up:
- Antonio "Tony" Marangolo: vocals, flute, harmonica, keyboards
- Agostino "Dustin" Marangolo: drums, guitar
- Carlo "Charlie" Pennisi: guitar, mandolin, vocals
- Elio "Nigel" Volpini: bass, sax, guitar

For Andrew: Ok, but for like I see it have both you reason. I do not want to do controversal and certainly it depends from the point of view. However it is true that BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE is the continuation of the GARYBALDI and it their not inclusion in www.progarchives.com is serious!!!

PERIGEO/ PERIGEO SPECIAL/ NEW PERIGEO recommendations
I wanted to carry your caution a very important group for the Italian scene of the 70's. Are you are PERIGEO. Are you played very varied Jazz that had big parts of sax and guitar. Their pieces were Free/ Swing jazz Rock but their evolution, dictated from Giovanni Tommaso, they greater author, verse moments carried them where shine through a fusion between Funky and Jazz (you see above all the double concet album "Alice" by name PERIGEO SPECIAL).
The discs that I advise are:
1) AZIMUT (1972): 4 stars
2) ABBIAMO TUTTI UN BLUES DA PIANGERE (1973): 5 stars
3) GENEALOGIA (1974): 4 stars
4) La Valle Dei Templi (1975): 4 stars
5) ALICE (1980/ with the name PERIGEO SPECIAL): I have the five track "Alice Q-disc" and I rather this 4 stars
6) I Grandi Del Rock (1993/ compilation): 4 stars

Well, Perigeo are an excellent jazz-rock band, one of the big three in Italy along with Area and Arti e Mestieri (as for stmphonic we have respectively Le Orme, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, PFM).
Their "Abbiamo Tutti un Blues da Piangere" is considered the most classic contribution from their repertoire and is very good. |

Well, I like Piccola Rapsodia dell'Ape of Le Orme. It's not at the same level of the previous Florian, 'cause it shows the band moving rapidly to pop music...classic instrumentation and playing is still fine, though, so the album becomes a worth buying for any good Le Orme's fan.
Excellent recommendations, by the way!

Common problem also to:
- New Trolls: After "Concerto Grosso n° 2" produce only POP album.
- Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso: Shortered the name in Banco produced POP album and only in the 90's are returned to produced Prog music.
- Area: After the death of Demetrio Stratos are passed to produce an album Jazz ("Tic & Tac", moreover very good).

I had way to gain both the album of the DALTON ("Riflessioni: Idea D'Infinito" 1973 CD by Btf/ Vinyl Magic [VM CD 012] and "Argitari" 1975 CD by Giallo Records [SAF 032]). I have to sire that itself if yourselves like the Jethro Tull this group is very indicating.
I did not understood because it does not be included in ProgArchives because it is really worthy of careful promotion seen the high standard of their music, risen of Symphonic Folk Prog.
Italianprog site page is: www.italianprog.com/it/a_dalton.htm (in Italian)

FOR ANDREA CORTESE: The HYAENA I found them to the address www.verorock.it/recensioni/?DRECENSIONE=418&CLASSICO=False but from how much understood did pure Heavy Metal à la Manowar.
The discography is the following one:
1987 MC Demo "Metamorphosis"
1990 Mini LP "Grey Sky"
1994 Self produced CD "Live, Box And Jam"
1995 CD for Pick Up Records "Scene"
