fandango, two types of "grass hockey" in the US: field hockey and lacrosse. The former is played almost exclusively by women and is closer to traditional ice hockey in that a ball is hit with sticks between players and then shot at the net, whereas lacrosse involves the sticks with nets and the ball is carried around and passed through the air. I think there may be a professional or semi-pro men's lacrosse league, but the popularity of it is quite small, much less than the NHL, which itself has become a very minor sport in the American sphere.

^^ thanks for that; very helpful.
Yes, I was aware of lacrosse as a separate sport. In the UK, we get practically no coverage of either kind of hockey (unless you can find it on an obscure satellite channel)....
but we tend to cheer on our teams (mens and womens) every 4 years at the Olympics (on grass) until we get knocked out. We then briefly wonder why we aren't any good at it, declare that more investment should go into the grass roots of the sport, then promptly forget about it for another 4 years...

There is Major League Lacrosse here in the States. http://www.majorleaguelacrosse.com/ It is really popular here on the East Coast, and HUGELY popular in my state of Maryland.Baltimore has it's own pro team, the Baltimore Bayhawks, and we go to games pretty regularly. I played alot growing up,and played for my HS for four years.Great game, pretty fast paced and high scoring,it can also be really rough. Great game |

Field Hockey is played around the world by men. Pakistan is one of the stronger nation and The Netherlands are quite good at it too. But among male sports, it is over-run bu mùany other sports.
Which is not quite the case for women. It appears a bigger sport for them because football, rugby etc.. are not in vogue between them.
And Lacrosse is quite different. You never hit the ball with the cane, the way you do in hockey as in a slapshot. The Lacrosse cane is more used as a glove than a stick.

let's just stay above the moral melee

I went to the opening night game at the Pepsi Center here in Denver. The Stars came back 3-2 to beat the Avalanche in overtime. It was an exciting game, but once Dallas got their offensive game going in the third period, Theodore couldn't make a clutch save.
