Final Cut. Love Beach sounds like ELP working on good ideas but they need a bit of energy. Shame on Atlantic for pressuring this band. A month's break, a month recording a decent marketing campaign, even a half baked one and all would have been well. Love Beach has the worst cover. It's not even a well done awful pic, it's off. Record company shambles. Who were they hoping to target market? Teeny bop girls? Teeny bop boys? Teen bop prog fans? Kid of succeeded there admittedly...

I'm not a huge fan of both albums, but actually can say that I enjoy both albums a little.

I'm actually one of those weird people who happens to like both albums. Not on the top of my list, but I listen to them once in a while.

I bought TFC on release and really enjoyed the album. Perhaps my youth, the recent events in the Falklands and my politics clouded my judgement. After the initial saturation playing I revisited the album a few years later and I just did not like it at all. I heard it again during a PF marathon last year and barely got through it to the end.
I will vote ELP because I quite like Officer and a Gentleman. |

I've never actually listened to Love Beach (I guess I'll have to before voting in this poll), and I threw out the Floyd record long ago. I have listened to The Final Cut recently, I'll be back.

OK, I'm back.
Final Cut is dark, moody and depressing. It has none of the mesmerizing, mind-altering inducing qualities that some of their previous records did. I'm not a big fan of The Wall either. Love Beach is upbeat and silly at times. If I was not a prog fan, and all I'd ever heard were the radio hits from ELP, I would like this record. This is a prog sight however, so I understand the rancor. I just don't understand why they chose to run the the four songs of the Officer and a Gentleman suite together if they were going to be so lazy and not even try to connect them in some manner to have it run as one long piece. Maddening. I still prefer silly over depressing. |

eh? It's clearly an epic track and one concept. Unfortunately its a bit lame like the rest of the album. That said its a legit ELP album unlike that massive dump of an album In The Hot Seat. Carl Palmer plays well , Greg Lake sings well but Emerson sounds tired to me. He admitted he was a bit depressed and lost his way with ELP because he wanted to create the massive sound he had with the orchestral but just couldn't. Wait about 7 years and he was back and flying with MIDI technology. Emerson was at least 80% of what was great about ELP and when he want AWOL the band was 'gone'. That said Emerson enjoyed the silliness of it and certainly went along with the idea of it. In the end he unofficially produced it as Lake 'baled' but no one in the band wanted credit (shocker!)

Look at the timing of this. Emerson had already begun his exploration of 'Soundtrack' music with Pirates. I'm guessing Greg and Carl, on top of all the other stuff going on, didn't want to do another movie piece. I think the concept was strong and some of the writing was pretty good, but it should have been the whole album and properly produced. To make a distant comparison, it could have been their The Wall. A broader concept of WW ll and less of the sentimental sap stuff. After this album Keith was in full movie music mode with his solo works. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda !

Thank you for supporting independently produced music

I don't own a copy of Beach but I think I have an original vinyl of Cut.....mostly for collectable reasons since Floyd fans will pay good money for any original Floyd on vinyl.

^ It shows just how great Pink Floyd was (at least in my opinion), that even one of their least favourite albums, for me, is actually a rather good one.
