The Gates Of Paradise. Five years ago I would have probably answered LTE but I'm not much of a metal gal anymore

A bit of a wasteland of a year for me, I only have LTE of those and only 15 albums in total. My highlights would be:-
Thinking Plague - In Extremis Present - Certitudes Tortoise - TNT Edited by Nogbad_The_Bad - February 10 2021 at 13:50 |

I'm just exploring Arena's discography and The Visitor is absolutely wonderful.

Chroma Key's "Dead Air For Radios" is a special album and my pick. Bruford Levin Upper Extremities self titled debut would be my second choice.

Struggling to find anything there I like. To me 1998 wasn't a good year.

DEATH on this one, but only because you've omitted Gorguts OBSCURA! My 1998 top pick.

I was thinking this myself. The fact that I chose Marilyn Manson said as much for me. Because I can’t imagine ever choosing Manson as the winner in any year, but he stood out from this list for me. Was 1998 such a bad year? Well, I turned to my iPod to see what it had to say on the matter, and so long as the albums are tagged correctly (and quite often I have found that the year of release is not tagged accurately), then I actually enjoyed a lot of music from 1998. It simply wasn’t very prog-oriented (though there are a couple of prog releases in there). I’ve kept only Marilyn Manson from this poll in my list, as it was the point of reference. And while it was what I voted for in this poll, it would come near the very bottom of the list of albums on my iPod. Then again, most people on this forum might not find a lot to like in my list. 🤷🏻♂️ Anathema - Alternative 4 At the Drive-In - In/Casino/Out Black Sabbath - Reunion Blue October - The Answers Bruford Levin Upper Extremities - Bruford Levin Upper Extremities Jerry Cantrell - Boggy Depot Catalonia - International Velvet Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding Dream Theater - Once in a LIVEtime Garbage - Version 2.0 God Lives Underwater - Life in the So-Called Space Age Steve Hackett - The Tokyo Tapes Juliana Hatfield - Bed Katatonia - Discouraged Ones Korn - Follow the Leader Mark Lanegan - Scraps at Midnight Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals Mansun - Six Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets Heather Nova - Siren Placebo - Without You I’m Nothing Pulp - This Is Hardcore Queens of the Stone Age - Queens of the Stone Age R.E.M. - Up Lou Reed - Perfect Night: Live in London Reverend Horton Heat - Space Heater Stabbing Westward - Darkest Days Sunny Day Real Estate - How It Feels to Be Something on The Superjesus - Sump System of a Down - System of a Down Therapy? - Semi Detached The Tragically Hip - Phantom Power Ulver - Themes from Blake UNKLE - Psyence Fiction David Usher - Little Songs |

The best albums from 1998 I have are probably Mark Hollis' solo album and Permutation by Amon Tobin, then the Godspeed one and In Extremis by Thinking Plague. Excellent albums for sure, but wouldn't maybe have won many other years, so I'm with you on that one.
