When I went to school, we thought that their pupils all think they're better, all full of themselves thinking of themselves as geniuses, surely most of them came from a pretty rich background, and they (or at least a majority of them) were strongly right wing. They put all kinds of stuff in their hair but our hair was longer, we were the progressive ones, we were better in English (be it the only subject in which we could beat them), didn't have to waste our time on silly Latin and ancient Greek (except that I elected Latin at some point) and in some sense we also thought we were better. (Oh, and we had German chancellor Helmut Schmidt as alumni, at least that, whereas they had Hitler's Minister of Economics, Hjalmar Schacht... admittedly they had some more impressive ones, too.)

Holger Hiller is ten years older than me, and I don't know him personally, no idea how he related (or didn't) to our stereotype, but he went to that school, and when I went to the lefty long hair rival school, his band Palais Schaumburg was held as something of a flagship band by that school. I thought that Palais Schaumburg represented them well, not stupid, but trying hard to be supercool and special. (Actually I now think that they were better than anything our school would have put together music-wise, including my own stuff.) When I heard Holger Hiller's solo work, I finally realised that he, at least he, really is a genius, which was hard to admit. Anyway, have fun with him!

wow man...  not sure if that will get a 1-3 vote.. but definitely the WTF selection (in a good way).

and yeah..  I will have fun with him. Micky style

Normally at work during the noon hour we unload with the local NPR station WPFW that plays an hour of the blues, old school sh*t.  We blast that stuff till our ears bleed

but not tomorrow.. no sir

I'm loading that into the player as I type.. and see what kind of reaction that song gets me at the office.  Either reaffirmation of my god like status I currently enjoy...  or a sudden fall from grace and tossed out the front door onto my ass and the doors locked behind me.

Vegas is giving me even odds on this one... I'll report back tomorrow

So far there are two songs I desparately want to vote for, but I have to wait and see what competition it gets from the songs that are yet to be selected.

Hi,

Johnny Cash's best song was the one that LIVE (the band) did ... it was way better sung and played!

This week it'll be JJ Grey & Mofro - Lochloosa.

I spent nearly 9 years in Florida after spending most of my life in California. Definitely a different culture. But it's the heat and humidity. Killed off some brain cells and dropped some IQ points. Whenever you hear about something dumb happening out of Florida, it's because of the heat and humidity. I'll say that over and over. In any case, I did have some good times, and this song always makes me think of my time down there in a good way.

May we vote?

13 songs is not very much, but at least it makes the voting easier.

I'm not sure if this fits the theme of what we are trying to do here, but I'd like to suggest Cake's The Distance:

That's awesome, ScottClap! Added to the list. If you don't mind, let's wait until tomorrow to vote, in case somebody else wants to add their own contribution.

OK, as I said yesterday, I believe the time has come to start voting! I'll probably wait until I have listened to all the songs once again.

1. The Hu. Really like this genuine Mongolian Folk Metal thing.
2. Johnny Cash.
3. Sebastian.

Also good: JJ Grey & Mofro, but he takes quite a lot of time to drive home his point.
Peculiar: Jano Brindisi. The theme of a girl turning into a gorilla seems quite the other way around to me: while age proceeds I'm gradually developing some similarity to a silverback whilst my wife has unlearned some bonobo behaviour patterns. Nice guitar by the way.

I could not stand the Holger Hiller track and stopped it after 1:35. This one was directly putting on my nerves. Pleased to read that the guy refrained from making music and became a teacher: I guess he made the right choice.

Hard to order these for me and again, there were several contenders if there was a 4th choice.

1.  Johnny Cash.  I had not heard this whole release, only his cover of "Hurt," which I also find moving.  Also, even though I'd known his name had never really listened to Nick Cave until Ghosteen was released, again a supremely moving recording.  Johnny's evocative voice is so perfectly suited to this song.  Had to go with it for #1.

2.  HU.  You already know my penchant for non-western music.  Would have been #1 without Mr. Cash.

3.  Avatarium.  Something about this just got me, I like the vocals and the spookiness.

Other thoughts....  TB Sheets.  Love Van Morrison, this one isn't in my top picks for him, but it still resonates and, fits another personal penchant.....really dark, sad subject matter.

Cake was a surprise.  Not a fan of mostly spoken modern stuff, but I did like what he was saying and the video was well done for the piece (but this isn’t about videos).  Also enjoyed the juxtaposition of horns peeking in and out.

Holger Hiller.  Not for me, reminded me of when I wanted to listen to classical music during an MRI and they had some pretty avant-garde classical playing on the headphones.  That being said, it did fit in with the sounds of an MRI, but I asked as soon as I could if they could change the station.

Sebastian….loved the music, not so fond of the voice and delivery.

Covenant of Thorns almost made it, too.  I liked the singer, would like to hear it redone with less of an 80’s feel to the production (but I did like some 80’s music)
