The tricky bits: each duplicate entry has several reviews/ratings.  Some of these reviews/ratings are by the same people who reviewed/rated the original entries (and in the case of Unrest, the reviewer simply copied his review over to the remastered version).  Would it be possible to combine each of these doubles into a single entry for each album?  It bugs me to see these unnecessary duplicates, I confess.

Bump.

Unfortunately we can't fuse two entries into one, we can just delete duplicates if they don't have reviews.

Wait up, I've sorted Legend and the offending duplicated album is now gone and there were only 3 'ratings only' reviews not duplicated that had to be deleted (faust3rd, -gil and a ? member subsequently deleted from the site - regrettable, but they have negligible impact on the overall score as none are weighted) Only two written reviews weren't duplicated (by Phil and Burgersoft777) so I've PM'd  their (copied) reviews plus ratings and invited both to resubmit the critters on the dedicated album page.

Bugger, wish I'd never started this. The Henry Cow Unrest Remastered album has been removed and references to it are now included in the releases information of the original 1974 album.

There were 14 ratings for the removed Remastered album:
11 of these were 'ratings only' reviews
3 were written reviews.

Only 3 of the 'ratings only' reviews for the Remastered edition were NOT duplicates of 'ratings only' reviews for the 1974 original: davedvd, (the curiously tylded?) ~Emin~

and a person whose user name no longer appears in the members lists ([email protected] must have asked to be deleted or was permabanned with his defunct e-mail address being the only remnants of his existence from circa Jan 2004)

Only 1 of the written reviews for the Remastered edition was NOT a duplicate of a written review for the 1974 original: that of Talkative Pear Atavachron

I have sent PM's to davedvd and Emin inviting them to re-submit their 'rating only' review scores via the dedicated album page. Similarly, Atavachron has been asked to re-submit his written review using a copied version of the original I pasted into his PM together with his score.

(cos we can't change the link of a review ID to an album ID dammitAngry)

I have neither the energy or inclination remaining to tackle Western Culture tonight (promise I'll have a look at that one tomorrow)Sleepy

Right, Western Culture by Henry Cow has been 'remedied'

There were 9 ratings for the 2001 Remastered edition
7 of these were 'ratings only' reviews
2 of these were written reviews

Only 2 of the 'ratings only' reviews for the Remastered edition were NOT duplicates of 'ratings only' reviews for the 1979 original: desistindo and zebehnn

Both the written reviews for the Remastered edition were NOT duplicates of written reviews for the 1979 original: Phil and Royal Jelly

I have sent PM's to desistindo and zebehnn inviting them to re-submit their 'rating only' review scores via the dedicated album page. Similarly, Phil and Royal Jelly have been asked to re-submit their written reviews using a copied version of the originals I pasted into their PMs together with their scores.

The effect of these changes to the three duplicated Henry Cow albums is barely negligible in terms of overall score (as only 4 'ratings only' reviews were lost)

However, I would like to reiterate what the Admins have stated on this type of issue several times in the past:
The current functionality of the database does NOT allow us to MERGE the reviews and ratings from one album to another and have the duplicated entries deleted automatically. This is a completely manual process that entails sending PMs to those members whose reviews are NOT duplicated, asking them to resubmit on the dedicated album page. Yep, it's bowel shatteringly tedious work and in this instance the expediency was considered permissable given the relatively small number of resubmissions required. Should similar instances of album duplication come to light in the future, the remedy will require the input of site owner Max.

It should also be self-evident that great care needs to be exercised by members to avoid adding spurious albums as once they have attracted any reviews we will have another Henry Cowpat to wade through.

It's known for a long time that the possibility to merge albums is necessary. It's always a headache to manage them via PM.

In other threads I saw the answer that M@X tried to implement merging quite a long time ago, but after changes something was wrong with automatic ratings' calculation and he decided to leave things as they are.

Some more duplications:

DIXIE DREGS:
1. "King Bisquit Flower Hour" original entry (5 ratings, 5 reviews): http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=4293
2. Duplication 1 (0 reviews, 1 rating): http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=17653 (2 reviews, 4 ratings) http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=7172
3. Duplication 2 (0 reviews, 0 ratings): http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=13615
4. Looks like the same record (but I'm not sure) with different tracks' order: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=17653

JETHRO TULL:
1. "20 Years of Jethro Tull Box" - earlier entry (3 reviews, 23 ratings): http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=9893
2. Duplication (3 reviews, 23 ratings): http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=10952. Reviews not duplicated. Another problem here - one of the reviews is written by our late friend Febus.

I've been trying to get this debate started for more than a year now but came to the conclusion that no one else cares about this issue.
And it really is becoming a big issue considering the number of albums that are currently needed to be merged. Plus, let's not forget albums that should be under two or more artists/bands, but are currently under only one of them. Albums like the split live release by Agents of Mercy/Karmakanik or the 2010 Jon Anderson/Rick Wakeman albums are the first that come to mind.

I've tried to contact M@X, nearly a year ago, but never recieved an answer. That's when I gave up all together.

^ I'm afraid solution is not so simple and needs a lot of time for implementation and testing.

It's not that no-one cares about the issue, but just like Notaproghead points out, if a software remedy is not available it stands to reason that a number of manual fixes may compromise the integrity of the database. (The historical rating of an album may be affected e.g. if those members asked to resubmit reviews fail to do so)
For these reasons I'm loathe to touch any duplicated albums unless they have no reviews or ratings and can be safely deleted.

BTW although I haven't researched this thoroughly I think the Dixie Dregs albums differ in the following respects:
From the Front Row Live was recorded from a June 17th 1979 performance in Philadelphia
(This appears to be the same performance as that captured for King Biscuit's Flower Hour albeit the tracks are in a different order)
Night of the Living Dregs is a half studio/half live hybrid with the latter being recorded at the 1978 Montreux Jazz Festival

No doubt the Dregs gurus on PA will correct me if I'm wrongWink

^ Sorry, one of my links is wrong, it should be:

DIXIE DREGS:
2. Duplication 1 (0 reviews, 1 rating): http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=17653 (2 reviews, 4 ratings) http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=7172

^ Yep good spot, this is merely a repackaged edition of the King Biscuit Flower Hour album (but it's got reviews booDead)
I'm gonna kick this issue around with the other Admins just to see if there's a case for maybe:
1 - accelerating the anticipated software fix
2 - realigning the definition of what precisely qualifies as a separate album entry on the database to what we currently have
3 - limiting the scope of those who can add albums

Ain't gonna promise a quick result but do promise to keep you updated

I think the possibility for all registered members to add albums is one of the key points of PA strenth, even if it leads to inevitable duplications here and there.
By the way, quite often duplications are made by collabs.
