After last week's show of 1971 releases, the majority of tunes played this Thursday are from recent releases. Modern jazz from Go Go Penguin, Sons of Kemet, Will Frye and Alfa Mist. Indie rock from Sara Bug, Toma. Older recording by Phil Manzanera and 10cc, CSNY, Al Stewart, Pink Floyd and Renaissance. I think a pretty good mix to relax to and listen.

Even after 12 months plus of close down, the year has gone fast and we are not far from reaching LCR station close down for the university's summer break. However, not quite yet and of course there is the Album Zone variant every month along with a few additional specials. May edition is being broadcast sometime in the next week and everything to March 2021 is now available for streaming anytime.
Back to the LCR version and what's on tomorrow night's playlist. Exciting 70's jazz (funk) from Gary Bartz, plus jazz rock from RTF and Spain's Iceberg, the new jazz from London's Sons Of Kemet. Intriguing experimental music from the late Hector Zazou (the recently remastered 'Geographies'), The Warp Trio, Booker Stardrum, Jack O' The Clock. Prog from the obscure(?) Box of Caryons and Ambigram. Folk by Dr Strangely Strange and John Martyn. And then is other great music including for the depths of the archives String Cheese (no not String Cheese Incident).

Nu jazz from Go Go Penguin and Eivind Aarset/Jan Bang, jazz rock from RTF, new jazz from Dave Holland and Lars Danielsson, 'Indo' jazz by Jaubi. A broad variety of progressive musics from from Ethos, Pavlov's Dog, The Kelp Dwellers, Victor Go, David Sylvian, Rundgren/Wakeman/Levin and Jack O' The Clock. A spot the difference moment: Booker T & the MGs OR Cream? We do belive this week is the penultimate week of radio broadcasting of presented shows from LCR. The show for the 17th is the familiar mix of old and new from a wide variety of musics. Favorite proggie stuff includes Victor G, Jack O'The Clock, Box Of Crayons. Yet another reissue of Tony Williams' Arcana. Future releases from Pearl & The Oysters and the cello punk of Lung. Wolrd music by Anoushka Shankar. Summery joy from Califorina's The Kelp Dwellers. ZZTOP type sounds from Billy Gibbons. And folk of several sorts.

The last new show before LCR closes for the university's undergrad summer break - hopefully we'll back late September/October. Jazz/jazz fusion from Julian Lage, Charnett Moffett, Skuli Sverrissen, Squarepusher and Wayne Krantz. An unusual one from Asia, otherwise prog from Nadjiwan, Muse, Moron Police, The Mar Volta. Something from Frank Zappa's last American tour. Film scorist Danny Elfman does rock. Folk from Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Laterns On The lake, I Am Oak, Chloe Foy. Then some blues, punk and world.

Officially back for the 35th Season ... although probably been around longer... the Alternative Alternative Show from LCR. There has been an excellent crop of new music over the summer break, some of best I intend playing over the next couple of Thursdays. Favorites include the chamber punk of the third album by Lung, chamber rock of the string players the Attacca Quartet, and the September 2021 release from Peter Hammill and Isildurs Bane. And mustn't forget to mention the innovative new London jazz from Sons of Kemet. Gary Lucas offers some experimental electronica as La Beast Concrete. Fun folk from Ringlefinch and much more.
And while I'm here, the monthly ALT2 Show variant that goes out on the Album Zone, is available for streaming via the Mix Cloud (under 'Dick Heath')... up to the July 2021 edition. After last week's promise I give you several examples of Peter Hammill - prog and punk - including another track from the new collaborative album with Isildurs Bane. Jazzy guitar from Nguyen Le and Pat Metheny. Obituary moments for the Everly Brothers and Michael Chapman. Several dips into the back shelves of the archives and other new releases.

Third show of the academic year, less new (running out to be honest), but more of a few favorite tunes that should be aired once a year and then other musicians recovered from deep in the archives, who need also playing. The latter two categories includes the 2019 critically acclaimed album by Thank You Scientist, Thom Yorke, Maggie Bell, Be Bop Deluxe, Asia. Jack O'Clock is another gem of a band discovered and promoted by indie label Cuneiform. A real mix of jazz styles, from Go Go Penguin, Balamaya Project, Ali Bello, to Toma. Otherwise expect world music, folk music and of course, a little prog. Perhaps my favorite track tonight: the combination of Joe Jackson, Todd Rundgren and a string quartet with an interesting take on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. The mix of the new and old. New fusion from the Bruford influenced The Android Trio, also Jonas Hellborg, Ed Palermo Big Band and I would suggest Bruce Hornsby and Paul Gilbert too. Prog from Argentina's Bastion Per, an indifferent Yes, Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater. Blues, electronica, folk and so called lounge rock (that's Hellsongs). And a couple of familiar(?) pop tunes. Join me tonight at 9pm and remember we in the UK, are now on the GMT time zone until late March 2022. Quite a bit of music found in the archives, including a few personal favorites, eg. Jonas Hellborg, Matts Morgan, Tool, David Sylvian, etc. etc. Greatly enjoying the British folk music found on Stand Up Now, Music From Landworkers' Alliance. Several Swedish musicians to the for. A great mix of musical styles and music... but I'm biassed. Join me at 9 pm GMT tonight.

More interesting music tonight, some new, more old. A couple of Ron Thal aka Bumblefoot. New from Brit band Voka Gentle... the artwork for their new album reminds me of Krimson's first... musical genre type difficult to nail down. At last bought Thank You Scientist's 2016 album, and wish I had done so sooner; found an interview with the band on You Tube and got surprised by the vocalist. A couple of reissues: Golden Earring, Jeff Beck. Jazz, blues, the very best of folk, jazz, world. etc. from 9pm GMT. BTW the November edition of ALT2 Show now with the Album Zone people for broadcast in the next few weeks.

Tonight folk, blues, rock, jazz, serious, covers, originals, then more. The new: Susanna Hoffs (another cover), Memphissippi Sounds (the blues), Doran (folk), Portico Quarter (somewhere between jazz and electronica), Jah Wobble( a dub cover). A belated Happy New Year. I hope everybody had a good Christmas break. Tonight's show included a couple of raids into the archives to find bands long forgetting. Some albums from 2021 and a lot in between. Belatedly discovered one of bands of the early 70's never to achieve fame and fortune, but made one of the best rock albums back then, have got that album properly remastered and reissued in 2021, i.e. T's 'Boomland' record. The only tune they wrote and got covered by Landberk, plays us out. .Working on next week show, and it will be completely music released in 1969/70, as a sort of prequel to David Hepworth's book of 'musical social history' book , '1971: Never A Dull Moment' - a recomended read. In passing a new show, Dick Heath's ALT2 September 2021, can be streamed via the Album Zone, adding to the monthly shows going back 3 or more years.

Just read an enoyable book '1971, Never A Dull Moment' by David Hepworth, he of the Old Grey Whistle Test TV show and editor of various music magazines. Hepworth sections the book into 12 chapters, respectively January to December 1971, in which he outlines society and it development/changes whilst largely concentrating on the 'best' albums released during each of those months. This had me rethinking about previous couple of years, 1969-70, during which I believe significant experimentation and change went on amongst musicians, that result in these classic albums released in 1971. but obviously many musicians failed to evolve successfully, than those that succeeded. Hence this show sets out to play a variety of popular music to demonstrate changes, the asociated melting pot that became the heavy rock, jazz, folk music, progressive rock, electronica etc we continue to enjoy... and some that little/no impact.

Another special delving through the sector in archives, labelled '1975'. The period of just before a major popular music upheaval, when there were increasing grumbles about the rock dinosaurs dominating the music industry and the old rock'n'roll ethos having disappeared. British punk was stirring - the argument here being you could play great music with only a handful of chords, so who needs virtuosity - while the North American scene was more stable. So tonight's show sets out to play the variety of music heard back then.
In addition, a brief tribute to T2's Pete Dunton who died a couple of weeks ago.

Enjoying the Mark Lockheart's new album - in Derby early summer so a show to catch - the former Loose Tube and Polar Bear man delving into modern day psychedelia. New blues from Tinsley Ellis and Keb' Mo, old from Allman Bros. Archive raid for Warren Zevon (more next week), Merry Clayton, Traffic, Loadstone. Blind Lemon Jefferson on a new blues compilation - when will they find a recording free of surface? A band that fuses stoner rock and heavy jazz fusion??
