born before 1500. Erato actually was a good shot though; it was close in several ways

actually I could make a hint of that: she was not only one of the nine, she was also named the tenth of another nine by a fellow countryman

Must be Sappho then, named by Plato as the 10th Muse and presumably therefore the originator of the term Sapphic and thus later also Sapphic Erotica.

Ah, yes, she was one of the 9 ancient lyric poets, as well as the unofficial 10th Muse.

you got her, James. both the terms "Sapphic love" and "lesbian love" were named after her (she lived on the Isle of Lesbos), though she probably was bisexual.
Erato was in many ways close, because it pointed to ancient Greece, the nine muses, and to erotic lyric (of which Erato is the muse), which Sappho was famous for

oh, and the Gentle Giant hint: "The Moon is Down", a song from their album "Acquiring the Taste", is the title of one of her poems. here it is:

The Moon is down

The Moon is down.
The Pleiades. Midnight.
The hours flow on.
I lie, alone.

I have a new one.  I was going to find someone via the Random Article feature on Wikipedia but nobody exciting appeared, so I remembered someone interesting.

Male, deceased.

That’s the second time Sappho has been the answer (I also picked her some 100 pages ago or something LOL). I think I recommended the album O Μεγάλος Ερωτικός by Μάνος Χατζιδάκις (Manos Hatzidakis) at the time. It contains this song with lyrics by Sappho:

Back to James’ new one: European?
He say nothing is quite what it seems;
I say nothing is nothing
