Apparently Iancu Dumitrescu's music is called "Spectralism"...

Ah, I realise now that The Hyperion Ensemble is Iancu Dumitrescu, Ana-Maria Avram, Chris Cutler and Tim Hodgkinson... oooh!

Yes, have a look in the link to the Progressive Ears thread I posted and read there the posts from Dave Kerman and m (Michael Eisenberg) who explain all about his music, compositional style and philosophy and the various recordings.

The lineup of that Ensemble changes and is not constant. Iancu invites people to play in it.

I just want to post again to say how great this Normal Love album is.  What's so great about it is the patience it takes to understand each piece.  To understand the subtle repititions, the interaction between the instruments, and the general "volume" of the album is a really great treat.  I'd say the piece on the album that takes the longest to "understand" would be Hooks because under first listens because it all sounds so sporadic at first.  This may be my favorite release of 2007.
It takes a bit to get used to, but once you do, it sounds oh so good.

Here's another one for you all:

I have a recording by this Dutch band, called They Saved Hitler's Brain. I've only given it two spins so far, but liked what I heard. This is more for the avant-rock fans, I'd say, but it is not that out there or experimental (well according to my standards anyway).

Didn't find much info on them apart from these:
http://both-kinds.com/2006/01/31/dull-schicksal/
http://www.popinstituut.nl/biografie/dull_schicksal.909.html (Dutch, so not much use for me)

Here are some responses I got in the PE forum for this:

I haven't heard the one you mention, but have a few others; according to my recollection the very last one, Ambush was the most focused, but there's good stuff to be found on virtually any of their releases.

Assaf: You might also want to check out (if you haven't already):

AA Kismet - Lukas' band with Bob Drake
Vril - those two guys again, but with Chris Cutler on drums

My favorite Dull album is still, "Dikke Mannen".

Check out the first link up there; you'll find a surprise if you look good.

It sounds like I need a PE account... *ducks*

Assaf, this last track by Dumitrescu is the best, it's starting to work for me, but my ears still hurt, nevertheless!

Mine hurt too after I finished listening to it, it's intense, raw and like a bombardment.
Anything you listen afterwards will sound like easy listening...

It wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be actually, it sounds sometimes like other stuff... bits of Ahvak for one and even some Keith Tippett, but not as dark and gloomy.  Guapo also sometimes have dark industrial parts like this too.

Oh and check out some Aphex Twin, especially the Come to Daddy EP and the track called Bucephalus Bouncing Ball... that WILL hurt your ears.

I will give it a listen pretty soon!

Is it "worse" than Merzbow's 1930? That's some pretty extreme white noise! Big%20smile

Oh, nice. Where did you see that?

By the way, I got Normal Love in the mail yesterday. Listened to it today... wow, very nice avant-rock.
I'll add them to PA.

Surprisingly, I was talking to someone on Soulseek that knows the band very well (almost joined the band when their guitarist left but couldn't because of the commute.)  He said that they're working on new material as of now... should be out this year I reckon.

And awesome about Normal Love.  According to their myspace, they're already working on new material as well.

Thanks for thee tip off on Normal Love; checked out the samples on the myspace and enjoy what I was hearing. I'm not sure if it was just the quality of the mp3's on the page, but they have a raw and stripped back sound, which I liked.

Will keep an eye out for the new Yowie material, the last album was pretty insane, just one big polyrhythm for the albums entirity.

I found it a very different noise to Merxbow's 1930, I didn't think quite as harsh. From what I could tell it was analog produced noise rather than the digital form, which I find to be less harsh on the ears. I guess it is a little less abrasive. If you remind me some time I will have to upload some noise albums I have really enjoyed. Kevin Drumm's Sheer Hellish Miasma (my avatar), is probably one of favourite albums of all time.
