to be fair, I think SA finished being a straight up power metal band after Unia (much to the chagrin of the majority of their fan base)... I tended to feel that The Ninth Hour for instance (which is rather a swish album if you give it some airtime) is Power, Symph & Prog in equal parts?

of course, you may disagree... Big smile

Unia was proggish, I haven't listened to it in a while.
Their last album is barely metal. MMA lists one of their albums as symphonic metal, I don't remember which one. They also label one of their albums just as heavy metal. Confused

Metal storm and metal archives list the band as power metal. I agree. Geek

^ In that case, I now need to find a replacement for Sonata Arctica too. Smile

Maybe I should stop judging whether or not a band is Symphonic Metal just from the band-name alone - like Symphony X for instance. Embarrassed

sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but Sonata Arctica does not qualify either. LOL Good power metal, you might like them.
I listened to both bands first before I selected them and I know you don't have much confidence in Wikipedia's genre classifications, but Sonata Arctica are listed there as a Symphonic Power Metal band. The video below sounds symphonic to me. Smile

Fair comment. Big smile

I posted a link with a big list of bands for you, why don't you use it to find bands?

Paul, before you move away from Sonata, please have a listen to these and let me know what you think:

Go on, indulge me.... what category would you put them in?

Simply because there aren't enough hours in the day to listen to albums by a big list of Symphonic Metal bands in addition at all of the other prog albums I listen to every day. Embarrassed

you misunderstood.
Choose one band, in this case for letter "s", listen to a couple of songs and then use it if it fits.

^ The replacement band for Sonata Arctica doesn't necessarily have to begin with the letter "S". I'll leave you to choose as any Symphonic Metal band I choose is likely to be rejected again. Tongue

I already posted a link for a band called Tacere, Finnish symphonic metal, they do the beauty and the beast type of vocals, the male vocalist is not growling though.

Tacere - means "silence" in Latin I believe.

^ I couldn't help thinking of Bruce Forsyth's favourite catchphrase in relation to Tacere. Smile

SERENITY: My third choice of band after my previous two Symphonic Metal choices were rejected (not unfairly), so let's hope this band passes muster with Cristi. Wink

Mr. Sarcastic Paul, yes, Serenity is fine. You mentioned them together with Sonata Arctica. I only spoke my mind on Sonata Arctica, which means the other band was fine, no need for sarcasm here. LOL

That's perfectly fine. I listened to Sonata Arctica today and they got a chilly reception from me too, so we're both in agreement for a change. Big smile

I like Sonata Arctica, I don't know how you understood I did not. It was the genre label I disagreed.

^ That's hardly surprising as you're much more of a Progressive Metal fan than I am. I'll try and stick to Symphonic Metal from now on, with the exception of Ayreon & Dream Theater, obviously.  Smile

I'm surprised you dodn't like them, they are catchy and easy to get into.
Check out one of their latest singles, not a hit but close.

^ I like it! I'm warming to Sonic Arctica already. If I could describe the Cold video above in just one word, I'd say it's "symphonic" Wink
