I don't know whether or not they've ever been considered. I don't hear prog folk myself but am very much digging Crack-Up. Gorgeous album.

Funny how so many seem to have fallen for the new Grizzly Bear. Every time I've tried to reach the end of it I feel like taking a nap. Sounds way too much like all their preceding albums....but without the zing.

The new Elder is brilliant. Even better than Lore imo.

The new Sky Architect has really grew on me lately, sounds much better and inspired than the previous album, but still does not reach the heights of the debut, still recommended anyway.

Threshold's Legends of the Shires. A great balance of prog v metal with strong vocals too. Honourable mentions for IT with We're All in This Together, Nad Sylvan's The Bride Said No, Lonely Robot's The Big Dream, Magenta's We are Legend, Big Big Train's strong 1-2 combination with Grimspound and The Second Brightest Star and Steve Hackett's The Night Siren showing the maestro still is able to be relevant with modern prog!

I've been listening to the new Schnellertollermeier quite a bit recently. It's very patient, concise but complex music. I love the way they very steadily develop simple ideas into utter insanity; each song is its own little decent into madness.

My favorite for this year is Tricot - "3". Tricky, wild and interesting math rock. Unfortunately these three gals have been stuck in ProgFreak limbo for ages now.Cry

That's a great album, jumped straight into my top 3.

Maybe a cheat but the Art Zoyd - 44 1/2 Live & Unreleased 12 CD + 2 DVD boxset is probably going to be my top for the year.

nice to see not only prog albums being mentioned. Some others I also enjoyed:

Converge - The Dusk In Us (oddly enough the first Converge album ever I really liked)
Mastodon - Cold Dark Place EP (indeed dark and also atmospheric - way deeper than LP they've released in Spring)
Wand - Plum (interesting take on psychedelic rock that many of prog fans might fancy)
Dalek - Endangered Philosophies (not their best, but still good)

The new Ariel Pink and John Maus albums are brilliant. Maybe not prog but damn deliciously wonky music that pays tribute to the 60s and the 80s simultaneously whilst sounding oddly contemporary in the process.

New Com Truise is also really good. So nice to be thrown back into the synth sounds of every 80s Tom Cruise action movie...again whilst sounding oddly contemporary.

Talkbead Fou! Jack Umbria's Luciferian Towers has been winning me over slowly. Didn't think much of it the first time I span it. Defo a grower.

Yeah I've seen it in a couple of record stores both as vinyl and cd. I went with the former.

I know I've recommended this album before but Angles 9's Disappeared Behind The Sun is the real deal if you're into the experimental big band sound. Jazz for a slightly bonkers outlook on life. Adds that little bit of elephant-in-a-skirt to the mix.
