Now I wonder if my mom will like Ahvak... I've been successful so far with Magma, SMM, and Henry Cow.

My parents rarely comment about my music even though they've heard quite a bit... probably isn't a good thing.
|
My dad was the one who introduced me to my love of music through Rush and then later through Genesis, Yes, Supertramp, Styx, Jethro Tull, etc. so he likes MOST of my taste. He doesn't get into Magma, ELP, etc. as much as I do, but he still doesn't mind it. The only things so far that he has hated have been "Facelift" by Soft Machine, Meshuggah, and Mr. Bungle.
My mom, on the other hand, loves disco. |
Meshuggah is headache inducing so I see where he's coming from. My dad used to be into relatively cool music, Yes, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, Focus, etc. but now his tastes are pretty tyical "dadrock"
|
Yeah, I definitely understand why he hasn't liked what he hasn't, so I'm completely cool with it.
The rest of my family doesn't understand though. However, my brother's taste has yet to develop and in the past he has liked Supper's Ready, Opeth, Rush, and Meshuggah. He's not into music a whole lot yet though.

Well the vocals are very operatic and after 1001 Degrees, they seem more influenced by classical than jazz or rock (yes, I know Vander cites John Coltrane as his biggest influence - I actually haven't heard anything by Coltrane after A Love Supreme, which is when he went avant-garde, maybe there is a bigger link than I think?).
|
Yeah, I definitely can see it; it's just that there are many elements in there that put it off in another whole world than just an opera.

Grades measure the sum of intellect and work ethic in the sense that a very high intellect (things come easy to you) and a mediocre/low work ethic can yield a good grade, and somewhat lesser intellect and strong work ethic can yield the same result.
|
Most of my high school friends (guys anyway) are smart but total lazy underachievers. I put in a fairly minimal effort and got mostly B's, some honors/AP courses along the way (got a bit of college credit already), but never anything ridiculous. Actually, I often preferred the CP (average level) kids to the honors/AP crowd, but it depends.
|
I liked those kids but the CP classes in my HS were pretty brain-dead from what my friends told me. It's like they made too wide a gap between the honors/AP and CP - I had friends that just didn't want to be bothered with something like AP English, for example, but apparently the CP course was mind-numbingly boring - although it certainly did reduce their overall workload.
|
It depends on the teacher more than anything. I've had easy honors classes and then CP classes that required quite a bit of work, but generally CP is indeed a joke (can't imagine how core classes must be), but I got into college (thanks to SATs mostly, I suppose) so none of that stuff really matters now. Hmm, I might get back to packing. Condensing my entire CD collection to 2 boxes is HARD, and they aren't big boxes either.

My mom likes Ahvak. No surprise there as soon as she heard the band name. "Why are they called Dust?"

Yeah, I agree entirely there. I wasn't the best at test taking (I did score decently well to achieve full scholarship though), but I had a 4.0 GPA throughout my entire HS. I knew some people who didn't do nearly as well in GPA, however, and that were lucky enough to do well on one test and got really good offers at more expensive schools than I chose. I found that a bit ridiculous.

I've yet to hear Orff though... how does his music compare to Magma?

Ahvak's music is rather challenging though... but that's why I love it! There's so much going on.

I haven't heard too much myself, just studied and I know that the influence correlates over. I'm not the most knowledgeable person of music pre-1960s.
