If I had an album out I would pretty much demand/implore/beg all my relatives, friends and Facebook/Social media associates to give it a good review. I certainly wouldn't feel bad about it. I would expect my record company/ management team to get behind the album and promote it in any way they deemed fit. It's a business because it has to be a business.

But if you can't handle bad reviews you better not release albums at all. It's bad for your heart.

Every time you write and submit a review; you promote an artist. Every time you buy something in a supermarket, you ruin the planet. Every time you buy a book/newspaper/porn magazine, a woodpecker & family becomes homeless. Every time you put your foot down, at least one of god's creations innocently get killed. Everything is connected and every action you do is having an impact on other creations. At the end of the day........ and life...... you must be able to justify everything you do. I am more than happy to write about, and by accident promoting, artists from Leeds to Vladivostock. I am more unhappy about making woodpeckers homeless though.

I don't want to sound like a stuck record (but I willWink), but many of these issues would be resolved if we restricted access to ratings/reviews for newbies to the site.

I disagree with Torodd's inference that all publicity is good publicity (and I'm sorry if that is not what you meant). There are many people who will not buy an album if a hoard of reviewers on the site or in magazines are telling them it's crap. I certainly wouldn't bother as a rule.

People coming onto the site and posting obvious fanboy ratings/reviews are doing more harm to Manning than any constructive criticism, IMHO.

Guy, it doesn't necessarily mean that you are running a low level promotion scheme. It might be that there are fans of yours out there who are doing so themselves. As I said above, the reality is that they really are not helping your cause if that is the case.

This is, IMHO, a site with the highest level of integrity and, certainly the prog reviewers & collaborators, try their level best to present an honest and unbiased viewpoint when reviewing an album.

I've worked in the music business for 30 years, its one of those things that either you know it or you wouldn't understand it if I explained it to you. Kind of like rearing a child, how do you know when they are being 'bad', you just know.
Sorry Mr Manning I will not shut up and you should be thanking me for being one of the people who used to put in a lot of work here for your fine promotional device. Always nice to work with a pro.

Look Steve, IMO all this name calling and accusations of deceit are making me look bad.
 
I am an honest musicIan. I work hard all day and record at night/weekends. I make f**k all out of the album sales but I do like to write songs. That's it. That's all there is.
 
Some folks may have got carried away..thats the way it is too..I did not put them up to it. I don't think it warrants 5* either but if they do, then they do...what happened here was more like witchhunting and libel as far as I can see. 

But actually they were not alone...on some of the best prog reviews sites IMO, the album scored highly (using their own authoriised staff) on the DPRP it got (3 man Round table reviews = 2 x 10/10 and an 8.5/10), in Classic Rock Presents Prog magazine (8/10) - highly thought of highstreet magazine, Sea of tranquility site 5/5 review)
Got a couple of stinkers too though on some other sites...so...some great, some crap

Just because it gets a 5* rerview does not mean they are ALL fanboys or that they are being coerced...OK?
that's all I can say on the subject really
 
and YES. I can take bad reviews (based on opinion of content, performance etc etc)...just not badly written inaccurate reviews...there is a difference.
