Just restringing it should be fine, I think, and it shouldn't cost much at all.  I'd recommend buying a new set of strings (they tend to go "dead" after a while) at a music supply shop, and see if they could restring it for you.  Strings cost between $5 - $15, and I'm guessing they'd be able to restring it for you at minimal cost (they can probably do it in their sleep - it's pretty easy but not that easy).  Having someone tell or show you how to do it will probably make you ready to do it yourself the next time.

My friend plays a right handed guitar left handed, Hendrix-style. He doesn't string it backwards.

It's really weird watching Hendrix play - the chord fingerings are all wacky.

Depending on the style of bridge and saddles, maybe not.  A lot of them have different widths of grooves for the different string thicknesses.  You could take it in to a guitar shop (if there are any in your area) and they should be able to tell you if it will need any modification beyond that.  If you only need to swap the strings around, it shouldn't cost anything except the price of new strings maybe.

Another option is just learning to play right handed - my lefty brother did that

I need to remember to bring my earbuds next time I go see that doctor.  Between the "TMZ" program blaring on the TV set and the loud and bitter old people in the waiting room, I was getting sick to my stomach.  I'm beginning to think those people were planted there as a prank, that's how unbelievable they were.   Besides their loud political opinions, I also got to hear how crappy young people are (i.e. me, sitting right there), and (you won't believe this) one asking the other what they were there for (come on, did you really have to ask??).  I will spare you the answer she gave, but it's about as gross as you can imagine.  Holy crap, I need an alka seltzer.

And the TMZ wasn't much better.  A story about Howard Stern's campaign to get his viewers' grandparents laid.  Sure, reasonably funny (if a bit crass and exploitative like Stern sometimes is), but in a doctor's waiting room?  I thought those old bats were going to loudly complain about that too.  But maybe they wish they could get laid too.  Geezus.
