I've been lucky enough to have my two very obscure suggestions pass through with flying colous fairly quickly. Both completely unknown outside of a small circle of Finnish prog fans, Circusfolk and Discordia that is. Some teams seem to be quicker than others, or then the suggested band don't fall clearly in the hands of a certain team, so it falls in between and gets stuck. Like so far has happened to my latest suggestion Piirpauke, which I hear had been discussed before as well, with much approval but no results. I'm not in a hurry in any way, but I hope they get some final verdict at some point.

I'm late on this, but . . . "Yes" from me. Always the liberal when it comes to band inclusions, I happen to think the more the marrier. |

Exactly.
Besides this is supposed to be the most extensive guide to progressive rock, right? So in my opinion you shouldn't claim that unless you're willing to be extensive, which means including ALL bands that may not be fully prog but prog enough. So no matter how ridiculous that list could get, PA should include them because that's being extensive. You should let the individual person decide for themselves whether those bands are a waste of time or a gem waiting to be discovered, either one of those is what a lot of prog-related bands on PA tend to be. I've just read through all ten pages of this thread and as far as I can see no SC has supported this proposal or been persuaded by the pro-arguments. So my conclusion from that is they NOT be put forward to the Admins for PR evaluation.

As far as this discussion goes - I don't see DS in here either.
As far as I can see they will, at best, belong in the same category as UFO: One prog album amongst many non-prog ones - and as far as I can tell, UFO have a stronger case than Dire Straits. |

We don't need the No votes of every SC - that's not how it works.
You can discuss Jade Warrior to your hearts content - I've already said all I can say about them in your Jade Warrior thread

"Lies, damn lies and statistics" eh? ...anyway, as facinating as this is, could we continue this line of discussion in the How Popular was Prog in it's Heyday? thread (ugh, just noticed the error in that tread title) and leave this one for discussion of Dire Straits and their unsuitability for Prog Related.

I don't see a strong connection between DS and prog. Making a 14 minutes extended song does not necessarily mean it is prog, and it was incidental and marginal to their overall music style. My answer would be NO.

In my opinion, this is by far the best summation of the whole question. Unlike other bands we often see mentioned here, DS had no connection to prog even as regards band members (something that both The Police and The Talking Heads had, for instance) or sources of inspiration (something that the much-reviled Iron Maiden have always proudly claimed). As I said on numerous occasions, I would not lose sleep if they were added, but I see them as one of the biggest cans of worms ever - and that has nothing to do with my liking or disliking them. |
