Well Americans are wrong. It's an English word and it's been spelt theatre since before any Americans spoke their approximation of English (unless any First Nation tribes did, which I doubt). Same as "color". Calling a pavement a sidewalk or a boot a trunk is fine, but misspelling actual English words is just incredibly ignorant. The worst part is that some Americans have criticised my spelling in the past, under the misapprehension that the American spelling is the original and correct spelling.

There are differences between British English and American English. I'm not sure it's ignorance that created these differences. You are annoyed by the whole "theater" thing as well. What do you think of the spelling of "def leppard" then.

I believe it was Webster who decided to re-spell certain words, I imagine for simplification and to remove what he thought was unnecessary. |

I don't think anything ExittheLemming has said comes remotely near worthy of being banned or suspended. People said far worse about me about 10 years ago and no-one banned them. In fact, I had to leave for a few months to allow things to cool down until they left. I think we all need to be a bit less thin-skinned.

Ahhh... maybe that's why he doesn't like Van der Graaf Generator. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

What a bullsheat my friend! So the Danes are wrong as well spelling it "teater", the Poles "teatr", and I guess most of the countries all over the world when they accomodate English or French words to their national languages.

The guy's name was Van de Graaff. Kids! Stay away from prog metal. It leads to forum bans and nitpicking about spelling.

Yes. It was part of a campaign by the government in the infancy of the US as a way to further distance itself from the former colonizing power. The "streamlining" of the how English words are spelled (or "spelt" if you like) was a kind of practical justification. Largely performative. I think some of the changes actually make more sense, though others are certainly ancillary and largely redundant.

Thank you, but I looked the name up, I saw the correct spelling. Some of us can use a search engine... Can we leave the spelling and nitpicking and get back on topic?

Wow! I never realised some people genuinely do believe American English spellings are “wrong”, and actually get upset by them! This is amazing!
Honestly, I always thought people were just joking when they make comments about Americans being unable to spell. The thing with English is, unlike so many other languages across the world, it is a complete mongrel. Just like the English people. Unlike many other countries, I suspect there are very few “truly” English people in England. The people and the language are a crazy mish-mash of Angles, Saxons, Danes, French and more. It’s why English is so hard to learn as a foreign language (and for some, as a native language), because unlike most languages there are so many discrepancies and oddities, due to the way the language has been built upon and changed through the waves of invasion and colonisation. American spellings often make more sense, or at least, bring a little more consistency, into a pretty bizarre language. I grew up in Aotearoa, where UK English is used, so American English spellings have always been foreign to me, but I don’t look down on them. I understand jokes about them, and if they are made kn good humour, I have no problem with them. But to see people actually take seriously the idea that US English is “wrong” is somewhat disturbing to me. |

No-one has ever pretended that this was the correct way to spell the words "deaf" or "leopard". Dream Theater can also call themselves what they want and spell it how they want, and I have no problem with that, but when Americans criticise us Brits for mis-spelling words like theatre and colour, which are English words, that gets a bit annoying.

how about you don't attack me anymore? I've already asked to get back on topic, seems like talking about misspelling is more interesting. Let's close this thread then and someone start a thread about the different types of English usage all over the world and their differences.
