I am a somewhat astounded by agreeing with the greater part (albeit not the whole) of what Pedro says.
I don’t agree with Cristi’s reasons for closing this thread, so much as Pedro’s. What is overrated or underrated is an (almost?) impossible thing to argue. But I don’t see any reason to close the thread at all, because if you closed all “pointless” posts in this forum, there really wouldn’t be much left. And that’s without attempting to work out what is or is not pointless (as no doubt people would disagree). Ultimately, discussions that come from questions such as the OP tend to be about what makes an album distinctive, and that’s a good thing, regardless of whether or not the original question is ever actually answered. I may not have participated (until now), but I’ve followed it since the beginning, and found it far more interesting than many other posts in this forum. |

you are? because I bet no one reads your original post, whoever resurrects this thread just reads the title and that's that. so if you don't find the album overrated anymore, what is the point of this thread?

I'm OP and I literally disagree with every single word I said in the original post from 2019
I sounded like such an a****le back then as well I really described side two of moving pictures as "quite dull," good one Dougy

Some of us have been reading from the beginning, and are happy enough to see it continue? Even with new posts, there a lot of forum members who read only the title, and nothing more before commenting. It is obvious when they do so, and I shake my head as I read their posts, and wonder whether to bother letting them know that what they are questioning has already been addressed. But I never do. Because, ultimately, what does it matter? If people are posting, that’s a better thing than not posting (and I say that as someone who has lurked for far more years than I’ve posted). If people are resurrecting “dead” threads because they have something to add, there is nothing much wrong with that either. This is the only forum I’ve ever seen where topics are routinely locked after they’ve been around for a certain amount of time. And while I get locking a thread after it’s had no activity for a certain amount of time, if it’s still generating conversation, let it run.... 🤗 To keep this on topic, like many people, I am not so enamoured with Part 2 than Part 1, and I think this is often the greatest reason people give for the album being overrated, but it is falling into a huge subjectivity trap. It’s like the people that complain that Lamb or Wall have two much filler, and would have been better were they not double albums. So while I empathise with those who think TAAB would have sounded better as an ep/album comprising just Part 1, it would be arrogant to assume that no one likes Part 2 - let alone the fact that the artists themselves wanted Part 2. The same with Lamb and Wall, although for me I can’t think of a single track on either that I would call filler. In fact, I don’t believe there is such a thing as filler, and wish people wouldn’t use the term. It’s more about what you like and what you don’t. I like very single track on Lamb and Wall, so for me there is no filler. But as I don’t like Part 2, it makes it the longest filler track I’ve ever know! 😜 |

For context, let’s chuck in the OP, which I remember reading and chuckling to myself - thinking quietly that poor wee is setting himself up big time. The funny thing is, even though he may have changed his opinion since, I kind of like the stridency of this post, and apart from the tone it is written in, tend to agree with most points. I will never understand why this album is so highly rated, but I also don’t care. It’s never going to be #3 for me, and I can’t understand why it is. But it is, and that’s just one oddity among the PA database of many. I shouldn’t say oddity, as I’ll get myself in trouble the same way I have in other threads, but for the moment I can’t think of the word I actually want to use to express what I mean, As for Moving Pictures, I’ll never understand the popularity of that either. And I’d definitely put Hemispheres and Farewell above it, too - along with a heck of a lot of other albums. And I say that as a Rush fan, for whom Moving Pictures was the first Rush album I ever bought. Usually with me, it’s the case that the first album I buy from a band remains high in my affections, and often my overall favourite (regardless of how crap it might be compared to other albums by the same band). Often I will be able to see that what I subjectively like the best from a band, MUsT come from having bought it first, as objectively I can tell it is really not that great. Moving Pictures is the anomaly, as it was the first Rush album I bought, and far from being a favourite. |

I don't like to close polls generally, but am fine if other moderators opt to. And the auto-lock after a time of inactivity is not ideal to me either. I the case of the last post to revive this...
... Ruby is sharing an individual opinion and not commenting on what the OP had expressed. I tend to prefer such an approach to starting a new thread. By the way, I am one to read through full threads often and do like it when I see opinions/ perspectives and approaches change over time. That says something positive about the human condition to me. |

Especially when opinions change over time. There was a time when I thought that TAAB was the bomb. Now it's just a very good album to me. Still good enough to be rated at number 3. Or 2, depending on my mood. ;)

^This. This, this, and this again. Greg always gets it! Personally the change I would most like to see is the auto-lock after inactivity be removed. There’s no real need for it, and it merely creates more work for admins if they need to “revive” a thread after it has been locked. There are a whole heap of interesting locked threads on this forum, which I’m sure might still generate conversation from time to time as new people come to the forum. One of the first things I do when I join any forum is to read through the old threads. The topics of conversation, and how things are discussed or argued are always interesting, and a hint as to how the forum works, and how my own posts might be received. Most of the posts I would have nothing to add to, but several I read and wished I could reply to. I’m not the type to ask someone to unlock a thread just because I want to post, and I suspect that is true for a lot of forum members. Especially newer members, who may not know who to ask about unlocking a thread, or even know they can ask to have one unlocked. For me the locking of historical threads is a barrier to conversation, and a little unwelcoming. Also, the amount of times I see people complain that there have been other threads or that something has already been said is tiresome. The membership of this forum will always be fluid, and not everyone is aware of what has been discussed before. Furthermore, you can search to find something has been said before, but it’s long ago, and the post is locked. Now if you have something to add to that, or your own take on something, you’re either left with no choice but to not post at all (your voice is effectively silenced), or to start a new thread, and be roasted for it. This post has been brought to you by the letters T A and B, and the numbers 1 and 2. |

Thanks, and I do appreciate your posts, Nick. While I dislike the auto-lock and it does make more work for people like me, that was implemented by the site owner (M@x). He had his reasons.

Hi, I have no opinion in the matter ... although I always like to say that my opinions change every time I go to the loo, because something else was introduced to the argument! In my seeing, the only person that would not "change" his/her view/opinion would be the one that is not a "progressive music" listener at all ... and in all reality, that person should just state it is their favorite and that's OK. Reviving some threads should be left to the admins and depends on the amount of requests made ... but in some way ... the same 5 arguments are always getting posted in this board about JT, YES, ELP and KC ... so us thinking that some things change over time ... is a challenge, isn't it?

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Poor Tull get a bad run in here. They’re better than all bands. The book remix series is the best collection in rock music. Bring on the next 3 remixes this year .

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.
