Thought I would Start a thread for the Olympics as there seems to be bits and bobs all over the place.  At least 2 for the opening ceremony and there is an 'I hate the Olympics' thread somewhere too. And I just posted on the TV thread.

Anyway, disapointing first day for 'Team GB' (I hate that expression) lots of hope for the mens road cyclists blown out of the window through tic-tacs and apparently won by a drugs cheat.  But the mens Gymnastics were fantastic (Not usually interested) GB qualified 3rd for finals having not qualified for 60 years or something.

Paula Radcliffe looks dodgy for final, which will be sad.  THe Daily Mail decided it was their job to tell us before she had made a decision.  To top the dodgy racist stuff they have been saying about the opening ceremony - quality journalism.

I'm quite excited for all the sports I only get to see in America every 4 years more than anything else. Handball, badminton, water polo, track cycling, fencing, etc etc. Of course the swimming will be cool, ditto for track & field.

Go Finland!

And I suppose the USA too. Tongue
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive

I really like watching the different sports,  I like the Boxing too, more than the tacky professional stuff they serve up these days.

Watching NZ ladies beating Aussie ladies 1:0 on the excelent BBC website.

I guess it depends which country you are in if you can watch this.

Come on New Zealand.

Latest scandal concerns NBC cutting part of the opening ceremony - apparently.  'Abide with Me' was billed as a tribute to those killed by terrorism and specifically 7/7 in London (Underground).

It is said because 'it wasn't tailored to a US audience' !  If this is true then it is truly shocking - NBC should appologise to everyone.

Lochte upset Phelps, which was not quite perhaps so stunning a result, given the latter's recent form.  The men's archery final yesterday was great.  British hopes were dashed in the road race but other that, it was another exciting finish.

We normally get to watch mainly four kinds of sport on ESPN/Star - cricket, tennis, football and motorsport.  Golf, baseball and basketball take up any remaining time slots.  For some reasons, the days when you could watch snooker or badminton in primetime slots seem to have gone.  That's why I love the Olympics, because at least once in four years, these other sports are on TV and the overbilled mainstream fare takes a bit of a backseat for a fortnight or so.

I couldn't watch the Opening Ceremony live because it would have been well past midnight for me but I am catching up with it through the internet.  I have to say it is the first time an Olympic ceremony made a big impression on me since Atlanta (which was simply the first Olympic event I watched properly because of which it was bound to remain with me for a long time).   I will remember the images of Rowan Atkinson fiddling on the keyboard or Daniel Craig asking to escort the Queen (the statue of Churchill waving at their helicopter was a nice touch) for a long time, while I already remember next to nothing about the Beijing ceremony.   It may not have been perfect, and those who saw it live should know better, but it was stylish and engaging without taking on a "we are the BEST" tone that plagues Olympic opening ceremonies.

No its GB or Great Britain .  The Mail had some crap on the website critisising the opening ceremony in a similar way to Aidan Burley MP saying you would find it difficult to find a couple like the one portrayed in the house living happily together ie white and black living together good oncome etc II believe they then got rid of it after the Twitter Storm (Yes I follow Twitter).

So I don't hate the olympics, but now it has displaced the political shows on MesSNBC this morning.  Arrrgghhh arrrggghh %&*($$&$&!!!AngryAngryAngry.  Cry LOL

Imagine how the USA would feel if the BBC cut someting refering to 7/11 out because 'it didn't refer to us Brits directly' ?

The bit they didn't want you to see!
(Although, not very clear as it was on TV)

I'm sure if enough people complained NBC would show the Olympics next week or something

For those of you who do like it, enjoy your circuses.  Maybe if it involved people getting killed I'd watch. LOL

An event combining shooting with synchronized swimmers.  How about shooting at synchronized swimmers?
