Hey everybody.

I just wanted to let you all know that there's this german band called Blind Guardian. They started out as a power metal band but then turned to a more refined style that can be considered close to prog, especially the last two albums:

Nightfall in middle Earth and

A Night at the Opera.

Since there are so many metal bands up in the archives I figured I might as well suggest y'all some more good stuff.

Peace

Ugh.......... Nightfall in Middle Earth really does not sound very Progressive, but A Night at the Opera, that's another story  If you want to hear a lot about A Night at the Opera, go check out the song "Then There was Silence". Highly recommended

Sounds like I'm not the only one who knows about them. I'm relieved...:)

It's weird how people proposed iced earth for the archives and forgot to even mention BG....

Iced Earth is not Progressive, not even 1 percent Progressive. Jon Schaffer doesn't even know the difference between a D# and a B flat.

Listen carefully to A Night at the Opera then, sure its not Progressive Metal, but it is highly influenced by Progressive music.

I like Blind Guardian- but they're not progressive.

MAYBE prog-metal, but not really.

But one of the better Power Metal Bands- unlike Rhapsody.

Let me point out that even though I'm Italian I find it really hard to consider Rhapsody prog. They have some 5 albums out and they all sound the same.

A night at the opera on the other hand is truly progressive, although deeply rooted in heavy metal. There's even an epic.

Maybe considering BG prog is too much. I still believe their last two albums will prove to be a great listen for most progressive metal fans.

IF Rhapsody is considered Prog, then Blind Guardian is Prog as well. Personally, I agree with the common opinion here that neither are prog (and that Rhapsody was included by "accident").

BTW: Do you know Demons & Wizards? It's like all the non prog ingredients of Blind Guardian and Iced Earth thrown together ... today I was in a mall and I noticed that they literally had that record piled up on the shelves. I guess they figure that it's just what World Of Warcraft fans would fancy ...

Demons & Wizards are tight but DEFINITELY not prog. I dig'em but I bet they sound just like a bunch of noises to people used to Yes and BMS! It's power metal with medieval influences mixed with Schaffer's muscular rithmic guitar style. The lyrics are by Hansi Kursch and his distinct vocal style adds a lot to the compositions which musically are by the way almost entirely Jon's.

Their new album "touched by the Crimson King" is strongly recommended to any metal fan.

I prefer Avantasia ... I don't like Kursch's vocals. I think they are even more an aquired taste than James LaBrie ...

Do you have Live though? Cause Hansi kicks some serious a** on that one.

He also writes 50% of the music the band puts out, so you see how essential he is to BG.

You're preaching to the choir here ... I love Blind Guardian. But the SOUND of his voice annoys me.

Blind Guardian is awesome. They are my favorite non-prog band. They used to be my favorite band before I found Dream Theater...along with many other bands since then..

He is perhaps one of those vocalists that you either
love or hate like James Labrie, but I absolutely adore
his voice, its just very melodic and just stunningly
beautiful, not very good on the latest D & W, but if you
ever listen to his voice on Fiddler and the Green[/
U] you'll know what I'm talking about...

They used to be my favorite at high school. They sound more like epic metal than prog.

Their last 2 albums though have some progressive influences. Recomended for some good melodic metal.

Enjoy

Blind Guardian rules! One of the more individual metal bands these days.
Mildly prog influenced, but not al the time.

Avantasia!  They are so bland and generic! How can they even compare to either D&W or BG?

To each his own though, don't mean to laugh at your tastes :)
