They have quite long compositions, they are considered new prog, and their is something proggy about them, I can't put my finger on it though, I'm suggesting Crossover

"New Prog" is not a style or genre, it's just lazy journalism and lazy tagging.
Elbow, 30 Seconds To Mars, Biffy Clyro, Mystery Jets, Doves, Coldplay etc. that get tagged as "New Prog" are not Progressive Rock IMO. Edited by Dean - April 12 2011 at 04:05 |

I've always thought of Elbow as Prog-Lite.

Why can't "indie" simply be called "indie" anymore these days Sorry but Prog is not the only type of music that can lay a claim on creative experimental rock music. Edited by Bonnek - April 12 2011 at 06:19 |

I saw Elbow at the O2 last week and they were awesome but that's by the by.
I believe Guy Garvey described Elbow as "prog without the solos" and he is a big Gabriel fan, however they don't have many long songs (I would think The Birds is the longest at around 8 mins) and I wouldn't really describe them as a prog band.

And David Gilmour insists that Floyd are not Prog (as do many other bands members) but we declare that they are! Oh the irony.....

They can be proggy. Guy Garvey sounds quite like Gabriel at times too. The indie element to their music is probably too dominant for them to be considered for the archives.
If they were accepted, I wouldn't object, but neither would particularly fight their corner to get them in. |

Their sound does strongly resembles that of classic rock. I only know the latest album, but the organs and mellotrons there are quite outstanding.
Maybe they could stand a chance for Prog-Related. |

I'm not the biggest fan of them, but I do admit, their is something interesting about them...and I love that New Prog is being thrown around a lot...altho maybe in a few years people will see New Prog as a new form, look at Neo Prog, and wasn't Prog just a defunkt cousin of movie from the 60's at its birth

Perhaps Elbow should be considered (mainly) 'beige' (adult contemporary) Prog .Recent Pink Floyd sounds a bit beige to me even.It seems to drift along in it's ambient progressive way.Perhaps alot of Peter Gabriels solo stuff.Alot of 'so called' Indie has gone beige these days - lacks dynamic range - a very important part of good progressive music generally.

I suggested them a few years ago and my idea was rebuffed pretty much like this time. I still think that if Tori Amos and David Bowie and several others are in here they should be too.

Elbow so belong here. Tracks like "Newborn", "The Birds", "The Stops", "I've Got Your Number" and "Grace Under Pressure"...it's definitely prog. The fact they avoid solos in favour of songcraft not unlike Procol Harum is progressive in itself and who cares about "length" of songs? Just because a band writes a 20 minute so-called "epic" these days doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing. I can think of countless bands that I reviewed here where I've docked a full mark by said band dropping a turd on their album in the guise of an "epic". They will remain nameless because I do not care to be badgered by Steven Wilson.

Prog or not they are good, they are obviously influenced by some prog stuff too. Also, I am sure I read that guy garveys favourite album was Talk Talk's Laughing Stock, again I guess we need to decide if that counts as prog?

After being suggested five times (there was actually a later thread than this, but it was locked by admins) they are finally being given a shot in Crossover: http://progfreak.com/Elbow-107475.html?path=pa/recent.

HOH AH!!!! Elbow!!! I like them a lot, not sure if it is prog or not but they have a song that grabbed, skippy something... uhm.. arghh... ha wait it's called Lippy Kids!! Yes that's it! Plus I am a sucker for piano background tunes. To me this is an incredible ballad which I can replay all the time without getting bored, however this specific track in my opinion is not innovative to be considered prog to be honest (this is only one song, I do not know the rest of the album tho'). Awww but I love this song so much!

You make that sound like locking the thread was an act of belligerence, Keishiro left a link back to this thread before locking it so I fail to see why you think it necessary to even mention it, but thankfully, I no longer care.
I was once very protective of my old subgenre, but thankfully, I no longer care.

No, I actually agree with the decision to lock the thread. It's pointless having more than one active suggestion thread for an artist. This thread will now be the one that people see when they click on Suggest New Bands and Artists, so I merely mentioned it so that people following the thread from now on would be aware that this isn't actually the latest proposal that has been made to add Elbow to the site. I thought it a was a harmless thing to do, and was simply intended as additional information to give an idea of the popularity (whether right or wrong in terms of eligibility for inclusion on a prog site) that this artist enjoys. Sorry if I screwed up.
