Topic: Are any Aus PA members effected by the floods? Posted: January 12 2011 at 17:45 |
Brisbane has suffered an inland Tsunami.
The catastrophe of the floods that have swamped the major suburbs and city of Brisbane Australia has not stopped playing on TV channels for the past week.
I want to assure you that I live 4 hours flight from Brisbane so safe from the disaster, but I know that there are Australians here who may have been effected.
It is the worst disaster that Brisbane has faced since 1974 floods.
100,000 Brisbane homes without power.
over 10 people killed.
thousands are homeless.
it is huge affecting all Australians
pledges are out for financial assistance.
a live telethon raised over 10 million dollars to assist. But many Brisbane residents are now rebuilding from scratch having lost everything. A sad day for all Australians.
See the shocking footage and news report here!

My heart is with all those affected in AUS. On a related subject, I always find it interesting to see when something that is commonplace where I live happens in "developed" countries. Last year floods killed around 500 people, displaced millions and destroyed invaluable material things, such as half-a-millenium-old buildings, and nobody cared. When it happens in Europe or somewhere else alike it suddenly is on the top fo the news around the globe.

CNN news reports are quite graphic with flood footage. The streets are virtually like a river.
I am listening to the QLD premier now who says that the clean up is going to be treated like a post war crisis.
thousands of citizens have woken to the fact that their homes are gone. even the stadium is flooded so football is cancelled. The floating walkway even is gone , actually floated down stream before shocked onlookers. Most have moved to higher ground and are taking refuge in a showgrounds tent. An army of police and rescue officers worked tirelessly to help those in need, many were on the roofs of houses, awaiting helicopter pickup. Some of my relatives are situated near Brisbane but they are safe. Many are not so fortunate, including a poor little 4 year old boy who drowned in the disaster. very sad, and all Australians are grieving this situation that has devestated Brisbane.
I hope all PA Aus members are safe. My prayers go out to those who have lost so much.

That may be true and I dont know why that is the case. I know that on our news we were hearing about the Brasil floods and we were all shocked at the amount of devestation caused then. at the top of the CNN news right now is the floods in Brazil.

Yeah, that was pretty hardcore. At the end of the ear (late december/early January) entire cities on the Northeastern part of the country were swallowed by the waters of the floods. And every time when it rains a bit harder the streets and avennues of out metropolies (Rio, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, etc) become rivers. And the government won't do sh*t because that won't turn into votes, so shame on you for being poor and for living in the gutter.

If I'm not mistaken ExittheLemming has Brisbane listed as his location. I dont know if thats factual though. I hope not based on those photos.
Nothing I can say will help much. Best wishes to all affected.

Water holds no fear for us lemmings (we seem to be drawn to it) but I do appreciate your concerns. I am safe and well and although I live quite close to the CBD, the topography of my suburb makes it mercifully free from danger. We did have a lengthy power outage though yesterday (circa 10 hours) but electricity has now been restored. I was sent home from work on Monday (I am based in the CBD right beside the river which has now burst its banks after the last high tide and resultant flooding exacerbated by the surplus water jettisoned from the Wivenhoe dam) and have been told not to return until next Monday when hopefully normal transport and infrastructure are back to normal. There have been some awful fatalities and forced evacuations of properties in the low lying suburbs (Toowoomba currently resembles Atlantis) but at this stage opinion on the death toll is sketchy at best.

Thanks Jim. Thanks for all the condolences. Hard to ignore what is happening right now, even the state's premier was in tears as she gave a stirring message about rebuilding the city and suburbs.
