Topic: Calling All Non-Hip-Hoppers: Spot The Prog Sample! Posted: October 17 2010 at 03:45
EDIT: I'd like to sort of be the "administrator" for the game btw. I would appreciate it if others didn't post their own clips. I have my own little library I'd like to work through and if we have several on the go at once, things will quickly get messy. If one is solved in my absence, never fear, I will be along within the day to provide a new challenge ;) Thanks :)
Calling all non-hip-hop listening prog heads!
Kanye West's sampling of King Crimson for his new single seems to have stirred a lot of people up but I don't know why. Rap producers have always sampled everything and in my fairly extensive rap music library I have many, many examples of rap tracks that sample progressive rock bands.
Now you don't have to like rap music to play this game, in fact it probably helps as you will be unlikely to already know what samples are in the track. It's just a game to see who has the sharpest nose for the original sources of the samples.
All you have to do is test your prog ears by naming the artist and song that is sampled. I'll put up at one at a time and when the answer is correctly guessed, I'll put up another.
PLEASE: Do not use the internet to find the answer, or if you do, don't reveal it but let someone else guess.
Anyway, the first one's REALLY easy, I don't want to stump people off the bat, in fact I'll be ashamed if people don't get it right away...
Alright, hear the track and NAME THAT SAMPLE! No cheating now!

Well done :)
I've got other easy ones lined up but now I'll try one that's a little harder in my opinion. The sample comes from a song virtually *everyone* here knows... but will you be able to recognise and place it?

Damn, that was easier than I expected.
Well yeah, it would be nice if people discovered they liked some of the hip-hop tracks but it's fine if they don't. You can hate them all and still test your prog ears by spotting the samples.
