Genesis Live over Gryphon and Caravan, but that's because I've not heard Kohntarkosz .
I just ordered the Magma album. I absolutely can't get enough of MDK, so I figured the natural progression was Kohntarkosz! Wurdah Itah should also be on this poll, but I forgot to add it.

Of those I've heard:
Marillion: "Script For A Jester's Tear" > Genesis: "Genesis Live" > Focus: "Focus 3" > Henry Cow: "In Praise of Learning" > Hatfield and the North (Debut) > Gentle Giant: "Interview" > Van Der Graaf Generator: "Quiet Zone / Pleasure Dome" > Phideaux: "Doomsday Afternoon" > Renaissance: "Scheherazade & Other Stories" > Peter Hammill: "Over"
I've also heard Gryphon: "Red Queen to Gryphon 3" but not enough to rate it.
There are a number of good albums on this list, you can hardly go wrong. But I would advice Köhntarkösz. Magma's best album, I think. It's in my top 10 anyway.

It's a close call for me between Gryphon and Renaissance. Gryphon won just by a hair.

Pretty difficult, as there really is such a wide range of material here. I would like to know what you personally prefer in the way of sub genre before advising you.
For example, I got the Caravan LP based upon a similar poll I did a couple of years ago, asking for Canterbury recommendations to get me started in a sub genre I had never really cared for. If....came top of the list, but I really have not got into it, and all it did was remind me why I was never into that scene in the first place.
On my own personal preferences, I would go for Marillion's debut, which is stunning, or the somewhat flawed, but still essential, Genesis Live (I thought the set in the box set was far better), but would this help?
