Tongue

It's not that I have anything against Supertramp...although I'm still struggling to get into them.  I've been listening to Crime of the Century, on and off, for a year now without any major love affair developing.

I resent the extent to which progressive rock has been forgotten by classic rock stations.  According to the majority of mainstream radio, the seventies were populated by AOR wailers, funk, and balls-to-the-wall hard rock.  Enduring Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Journey, AC/DC, and 80s-era Chicago in quick succession is frustrating enough when you're merely hunting for a radio station to listen to, but when you're the DJ responsible for endlessly regurgitating mainstream rock pap...it gets old, to say the least.  Supertramp definitely deserve to have air time, but I desperately wish they could be sandwiched between Be Bop Deluxe and something by Klaatu.

Of course, that's what college radio is for.  Or podcasts. Wink

Very interesting, the fundamental differences in radio play from country to country.  Kansas is a really inescapable presence here in the States...which isn't a curse, since Carry On Wayward Son is a masterpiece.  Add Rush, Floyd, Styx, Yes, ELP, and Uriah Heep, and you pretty much have the whole spectrum of prog played on American radio.  Excepting a few DJ's with peculiar tastes, of course.  Wink
Really? I've NEVER heard Uriah Heep on the radio.

Most of the prog that comes on the radio around where I live is like you said, but with a few more including:

-Supertramp
-Electric Light Orchestra
-Mannfred Mann's Earth Band
-Tool
-Peter Gabriel
-Queensryche

I'll admit that Queensryche is a pretty rare beast, though.

We used to play a fair amount of Heep on the radio station that I used to work at in northern Michigan.  It was usually Stealin' from Sweet Freedom, but occasionally they'd put something from Demons and Wizards on rotation.

Aye, I suppose Supertramp do still get pretty regular airplay.  Not entirely sure that they deserve it...

Yeah, I'd have to agree.

If we're talking who makes the best "radio prog" music in general, as in prog that fits comfortably on the radio in general, I'd go with Electric Light Orchestra without question.

Hmm, I've heard Carry On My Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind, Point of Know Return by Kansas.  Everyting from Rush, it seems haha.  Roundabout, Starship Trooper, Yours is No Disgrace, Long Distance Runaround by Yes. Aqualung, Cross - Eyed Mary by Jethro Tull.  Reelin in the Years, Do it Again, Bodhisattva, King of the World, Rikki Don't Loose That Number by Steely Dan. Everything by Queen, and other stuff.  And mind you, this was today!

Not much in Peru, huh? LOL
You hear those a lot here in the U.S. (That's the definition of radio Prog if I'm not wrong)

I've heard The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Genesis) about 2 times.

On a separate occasion, The Musical Box too! (the closing section, which then led to "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway) I believe it was a live version and it featured Collins on vocals.

Of course there are specials with Genesis or Yes or even King Crimson, but I believe we are talking about Prog for radio...Or tracks that are constantly played in radio....The Musical Box or The Lamb fully played don't qualify as radio Prog.

Even in the States.the situation of radio Prog is not different.

Iván

Oops, forgive my dimwittedness LOL

As I was typing my response, I thought the question asked: "Which prog songs have you heard on the radio?"...regardless of whether they receive extensive play or not.

But I was off Embarrassed

Lucky Man was fun to hear

but Time by Alan Parsons Project is most fun to hear (heard it at least once or twice). A calming artsy influence on the radio, IMO! Eye In The Sky manages to be more commerical, good song though.

Logical Song - Supertramp
Lucky Man - Emerson, Lake and Palmer
Lady In Black - Uriah Heep
Pull Me Under - Dream Theater

That's a few ones I can remember on top of my mind, I didn't read trought the replies extremely well, but I'm quite sure that no one has mentioned these before me.

Focus Hocus Pocus actually got airplay in my area when it came out.  I've heard Carry On Wayward Song so much that I usually skip it when I listen to the album.   Oddly enough, I don't have the same reaction to Dust Up Your Nose.  Roundabout is one I often skip.  Money, the same.  Aqualung...

It's not that I disliked any of these.  Just more a matter of getting ill due to repetition.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
