coming up for the end of my foundation year so got to choose the degree scheme I carry on with, though I have some flexibility in it, I have the option to change after the first year anyway.

I joined uni to do "freshwater & marine biology" however found I have a liking for biochemistry, in an ideal world I'd do both, however they dont do a joint degree, and wont let me do a double degree.

talking to one of my tutors she recommended that I start the biochemistry degree and see how I like it. for the first year at least. looking at the modules obviously there is more emphasis on chemistry, and the only module from the "Freshwater & Marine biology" that I dont do is geography one.

I suppose I've sort of made my mind up to start the biochem for at least the first year, just wondering what other options might be worth considering

first of all, get an avatar for your PA account! And start a thread asking people whether they like it!

you could get a job at an aquarium and get comfortable around sea animals!  If you're lucky you could get a boyfirned/girlfirned out of it because people usually don't wear a lot of clothes at an aquarium!

I know a guy who has a degree in Coastal Studies, which is basically a branch of Marine Biology/Geology.

Unsurprisingly, he is having a bit of trouble finding a job.

Freshwater and Marine Biology is an awfully specific sort of degree to jump into if you're not sure about where you want to go. I would chose something that has more flexibility and will allow you to sample courses from diverse spectrums.

2/3 of people in your position switch majors. So its good to have some idea of what degree you would like to switch to.

my sort of plan is to carry it on through masters and PhD and do teaching in it. though I can see the biochemistry being easier to get a job with.

I've always liked fish, and this is one of only 3 universities in Britain that offer the freshwater side, so that was one of the deciding factors in going.

at first I was definite that I wanted the freshwater & marine biology, it was just during this foundation year I found I quite like the chemistry side, none of the other degree schemes really interest me that much

my possible choices are
    * Agriculture
    * Animal Science / Zoology
    * Biochemistry
    * Biology
    * Conservation / Countryside Management
    * Environmental Science / Biology
    * Equine Science
    * Genetics
    * Marine and Freshwater Biology
    * Microbiology
    * Tourism & Recreation
(there should also be sports science in there as well)

Genetics and microbiology are interesting, but not as a specialisation

should point out that so far al my results put me in the range for a 1st class degree.

How about a degree in Overpaid CEO?

Don't go for a Bachelor's Degree, because then you won't be able to get married.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

If I were you, I would definitely pick a more general subject for your Bachelor's degree. If you do something general like Biochemistry that incorporates aspects of what you ultimately do, then surely you'll always have the option of carrying on to a further degree, but you will have more choice. It could turn out that you become more interested in another subject and want to pursue a career in that.

Only saying this because it happened to me... I picked something very specific and it was really hard to get a related job in it afterwards. If I were you, I wouldn't just rely on the MSc ---> PhD route, think about possible jobs for when you graduate as well.
