Topic: Italian vocalists Posted: September 02 2008 at 10:20 |
The singers of Italian prog bands often have something special about them, some consider this a good thing, others consider it bad. Be it roughness, theatricality, passion, range, limited range or just about anything else, this is a place to discuss and list your favourite and most disliked singers from the Italian prog scene. As always, I expect some proper explanations for all the choices. Now get to it!

No surprise there, amazing voice and the things he can do with it is equally amazing. And yet some consider it annoying...

OIYOIYOIYOIYOIYEUGH!!!!!!! Agreed. The man is one of the most distinctive and interesting of the vocalists I've ever heard. Incredible force behind those demi-yodels.

I'd move those two higher up on the list. Both great with a nice showcasing of rough (Lupo) and sweet (Aldo). And just for emotional value I'd put them higher.

I have not heard many, but in the whole world a very small number of people can compete with Francesco DiGiacomo and Demetrio Stratos.

I prefer singers with recognisable voices:
1. Francesco Di Giacomo (BANCO) - obvious number 1, one of the best rock singers ever.
2. Aldo Tagliapietra (LE ORME)
3. Vittorio De Scalzi (NEW TROLLS)
Less distinctive, but good singers, to name a few:
1. Franco Mussida and Franz Di Cioccio (PFM)
2. Liliana Bodini (ZAUBER, CLARION)
3. Gaio Chiocchio (PIERROT LUNAIRE)
4. Bernardo Lanzetti (PFM) - he can be awful (on "Jet Lag"), singing, like someone on GEPR noticed, like Gary Brooker being struggled, and he can sing beautifully (on "Passpartu" album).
Demetrio Stratos and AREA are definitely not my cup of tea.
Hardly stand Alan Sorrenti, unbearable voice for my ears.
I also love some singers from non-prog area:
1. Fabrizio De Andre' - one of the best voices ever, in fact his music means more to me than many Italian prog bands.
2. Augusto Daolio (I NOMADI)
3. Danilo Sacco (I NOMADI)
4. Antonella Ruggiero (MATIA BAZAR), especially her latest solo works, when she stopped experiments with electronic sounds and turned her face to jazz, chamber and world music.
5. Milva.
I risk to be cursed here, but it seems all great singers are from the 60's - 70's. When I listen to new Italian prog bands (NUOVA ERA, FINISTERRE, CHIAVE DI VOLTA, RANDONE, MASCHERA DI CERA and others) I always feel the lack of original singers. Some voices are pleasant, some are harsh, but most are unoriginal. Though it seems it's not a problem of Italian prog scene only.

That's a fact that never ceases to amaze me. How can he sound so different on the two albums? Just more comfortable singing the style found on Passpartu, getting confident and safe in PFM or just deciding to finally sing the way he's supposed to Most likely it's some twisted combination of all three.

Well the obvious ones like Di Giacomo and Stratos have been previously mentioned, i also share the love for Alan Sorrenti's vocals.
But i want to mention a favourite of mine singer of an awesome band called Deus Ex Machina, Alberto Piras, what a voice guys!!
And what about female vocals? One who i love is Silvana Ida from Apoteosi who has a beautiful voice to my ears.

Francesco and Demetrio generally get the most praise and I would have them near the top of my list as well. They certainly have the most technical skill while the entire genre is/was filled with very distinctive voices, some don't get the recognition they deserve.
I'll go ahead and try a list...
1. Francesco di Giacomo 2. Demetrio Stratos 3. Riccardo Cocciante 4. Jimmy Spitalieri (Metamorfosi) 5. Fabrizio de Andre 6. Claudio Canali (Un Biglietto per l'Inferno) 7. Ivano Fossati 8. Alan Sorrenti 9. Simone Cecchini (Il Bacio della Medusa) 10.Aldo Taglapietra (Le Orme) 11.Leonardo Sasso (La Locanda delle Fate) 12.Mario Moi (Ubi Maior) 13.Andrea Alberici (Nota Bene) 14.James Senese (Napoli Centrale) 15.Jenny Sorrenti (Saint Just) 16.Lupo Galifi (Museo Rosenbach) 17.Graziano Zippo (Corte dei Miracoli) 18.Silvana Ida (Apoteosi)
Had to cut it off to stay reasonable, so I'm forced to exclude many good singers plus the one's that I've forgotten or haven't heard yet (of which there have been a few mentioned here).

That's one hell of a list Mandy I really need to get the Giganti album...I'm kicking myself because it just went out of print. Jumbo - there's another one I need to get into along with RRR, Dalton etc I can see you like the Rocky's Filj album, it's still growing on me...
