Sorry, did a typo. I meant "for" not "or". it's amazing how one letter can alter the meaning of a sentence.

Genesis or Camel or the mythical. Yes or LTE for the future alien planet. Or maybe the alien planet's actually in the present, just more advanced. Who knows? I lose all concept of time during most Yessongs.

Genesis for me. I love all three bands, but nothing can consistently match the best of Genesis, especially as a live band. The songwriting, the talent, the humor, the composition of the music, the accessibility and melodicism, yet still the structural complexity of some of the more classically influenced music----nothing better.

It depends on whether I want to go into the mythical land of gods and faeries, or to an alien planet in the future.

I know there has to be some limitations due to the sheer number of great prog bands but i can't believe that Rush and ELP are not included... baffles me.

For me its YES! they have been my favourite band for a while now BUT i've only just this month discoverd Genesis and i've been buying albums fast! they are catching up, i've never been so into a band so quick!

It seems like I've already voted for King Crimson.

my big three are KC, Henry Cow and Magma - it's just that reality doesn't reflect their massiveness! =P

But seriously, Crimso were vitally important to the progressive genre (Genesis was not, and Yes was only important in popularizing it, which we all hate), and Larks' Tongues is probably the finest "pure prog" album ever created.

Genesis wasn't ??!! Yes just popularized!!??

OMFG...Just cause Genesis and Yes had better sales with their great masterpieces than KC that doesn't mean they're just popularizing the genre!

Genesis was a heck of a band and was a very groundbraking band!
Yes the same!

His comment is about importance to the genre, not about how groundbreaking they were. In fairness, I think that Yes and Genesis between them hadn't a tenth of the importance to the genre that Crimson overall had, and both owed a good deal to Crimson, anyway (listen to Trespass, for instance). I agree that Larks' Tongues In Aspic is the best thing ever, as well.

Damn it, that's basically what I was gonna say...

Crimso didn't invent the genre, but it certainly took the infant form (as developed by folks like The Nice, Family, Procol Harum especially), and evolved the living crap out of it, as well as giving it a neat set of rules (which it broke a couple of years later, with sexy results).

Meaning that that big ole "let's fuse rock and symphony with jazz and play it real well and long and whatnot" style that Genesis and Yes picked up on was not theirs; however, of the two groups, Yes was quite responsible for making the genre popular (crap like "Roundabout").

Of course, there was another group that was also responsible for making the genre popular, AND was older than Yes and Genesis; the Tull. Yeah. They pretty much were awesome. But didn't invent for the genre like Crimso...

Genesis,

Easily.

King Crimson gets my number 2 vote.  I've always had difficulty getting into Yes, I don't know why, I've tried countless times, but there is something about Yes that makes it a struggle to listen to.

Yes > King Crimson > Genesis

If I would make a complete list of my favorite prog bands, there would be a few more names between KC and Genesis.
