Imagine that a huge record company has just decided to release a compilation album called

The Very Best of Progressive Rock

and, for whatever reason, they've chosen to call upon you to choose the tracks that best cover the best of Prog through the ages. You must give them fifteen tracks (of any length, but let's not go overboard on the 15 minute plus songs) to fill the single-cd album that they're willing to put out.

...what would those fifteen songs be? a very difficult task, if you ask me...

This is a rough sketch of mine...I'd have to ask for bonus tracks Wink

1. King Crimson- 21st century schizoid man
2. Yes- Siberian Khatru
3. Genesis- The Cinema Show
4. The Who- Sparks

Well intentioned poll, but the problem is, any decision made by someone with a modicum of taste will no doubt be overriden by some record company executive trying to sell records.  Cry

Maybe, although it has been known to happen. I have a prog compiliation on CD - published by Virgin - and the track listing is more uncommercial than most of those listed here. It has everything from Anthony Phillips to Matching Mole.

I would really like to see the collection to which Blacksword alludes.  Might reaffirm (well, not really...) my faith in the recording industry Wink and if it's available I might just scoop it up for a listen.

I probably don't have enough diversity in terms of the dates of my prog, but I'd go for

1. 21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson
2. Look At Yourself - Uriah Heep (probably doesn't count, but still...)
3. The Arrow - VDGG
4. Knife Edge - ELP
5. Les Porches Du Notre Dame - Maneige
6. One Of These Days - Pink Floyd
7. The Necromancer - Rush
8. You And I - Yes
9. The Silk Road - Steve Hackett
10. Lady Fantasy - Camel
11. The Musical Box - Genesis
12. Time - Pink Floyd
13. Depuis L'Automne - Harmonium
14. Birth - Focus
15. Crime Of The Century - Supertramp

I'm probably going to work on five-track discs, though that's mostly silly.

Roughly divided into 1 CD of more aggressive stuff with some jazz influences. 1 CD of quirky stuff and 1 CD of classic lighter prog. Was tempted to go for The Sky Moves Sideways instead of Depuis L'Automne, and a longer ELP track such as Take A Pebble or Tarkus deserves, but isn't getting, a place.

a single CD for 15 tracks is a bit short. even the originator of the thread would need a double CD to fit all the tracks on. so I will make it a double CD instead

1) Gong - Master Builder 6:09
2) Guru Guru - Der Elektrolurch 9:48
3) Magma - Kobaia 10:15
4) VdGG - Lemmings 11:39
5) King Crimson - Cat Food 4:54 (surprise, surprise; I always loved this song because of the piano)
6) Hawkwind - Steppenwolf 9:46
7) Tangerine Dream - Wahn 4:31 (another surprise)
8) Gryphon - Second Spasm 8:15
9) Henry Cow - Industry 6:58
10) Amon Düül 2 - Dem Guten, Schnen, Wahren 6:00
11) Faust - Why Don't You Eat Carrots? 9:31
12) Can - Pinch 9:28
13) Clearlight - Spirale d' Amour 7:00
14) Brand X - Unorthodox Behaviour 8:25
15) The Residents - A Spirit Steals a Child 8:44

quite unusual choices, but there you are

That's a great list, Jean, I know I'd buy that one. (and it'd be a great opportunity to give Guru Guru another chance.)

My compilation would start "01: Art Bears - Freedom (3:30)", end "15: King Crimson - Fracture (11:30ish)" and have songs from every other RIO band, Flower Travellin' Band, Magma and Gong (probably Eat That Phone Book), and would include the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" to help sell the thing. ;P No track times or further details because I'm horrible at that sort of thing without reference at my fingertips.

The Best Prog Rock album in the World..ever..

Yes, that is actually what it's called..

It's not actually a brilliant collection,IMO, but there are some surprises in there. Tracks you wouldn't expect. Well, I certainly wouldn't.

You've gotta be kidding me. We can credit the very best rock opera ever made (and some would argue the first truly great one) to the Who; Tommy. We can credit Quadrophenia to the Who. Even their other more commercial stuff is some of the best music from the late sixties and early seventies.

The genre is to diverse to compress into 15 tracks IMO.  A single CD would not work either.

Here is a Best of British Prog Rock 1968 - 1974 on 2 CDs

The Nice – Intemezzo from the Karelia Suite  8.53                       from Ars Longa Vita Brevis  1968

Pink Floyd – A Saucerful of Secrets  11.57                                    from A Saucerful of Secrets 1968

King Crimson – Epitaph  8.47                                                        from In the Court of the Crimson King  1969

Colosseum – Beware the Ides of March 5.34                                 from Those Who are about to Die Salute You 1969

David Bowie – Cygnet Committee  9.33                                        from Space Oddity 1969

Van Der Graaf Generator – Refugees  6.23                                    from The Least we can do is Wave to Each other 1970

Curved Air – Vivaldi  7.26                                                              from Air Conditioning 1970

The Edgar Broughton Band - Evening Over Rooftops  4.57          from Edgar Broughton Band 1971

Emerson, Lake & Palmer  - The Endless Enigma 10.34                  from Trilogy 1972

Strawbs – New World  4.11                                                           from Grave New World 1972

Genesis – Supper’s Ready 22.54                                                   from Foxtrot 1972

Roxy Music – A Song For Europe  5.46                                        from Stranded 1973

Yes - Yours is No Disgrace 14.21                                                   from Yessongs 1973

Al Stewart – Roads to Moscow  8.00                                            from Past, Present & Future 1974

Alex Harvey – Anthem  7.55                                                          from  The Impossible Dream 1974

All right....any prog greatest hits would have to start with 21st Centurty Schizoid Man and end with Octavarium in my book.

In between would be Starless, The Cinema Show, Awaken, Hamburger Concerto, Tarkus, Ein Klein Heldenleben, PT's Arriving Somewhere...., One Word, Appena Un Poco, Depuis Le Automne, In a Glass House, Lunar Sea, The Musical Box, Song for America and Symphony X's Rediscovery.

At least those are the songs blow me away each and every time...as well as give me a new appreciation for the granduer that is prog.
Thank you, God of Rock, for this chance to kick ass

I have a copy myself. It wasn't too expensive and let me hear some bands I'd wanted to hear but didn't want to risk my hard-earned on. OK, it isn't perfect (no King Crimson!) but it's a pretty good introduction to that thing we call prog.
