Since there are a lot of bands that seem to get more "mainstream" as time goes by, like Genesis, Rush, Yes, Journey, etc., i was wondering if there are any bands people know of that start off as a "mainstream" band and as their careers progress, they make more "progressive" music.

Opeth, Death, Mastodon are the ones I can come up with at the moment.

i've also found the same with Iron Maiden. They made Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, then made a few mediocre albums, but ever since Brave New World came out in 2000 it feels like they've been heading into more progressive territory |

Although I haven't heard their respective first albums, I've heard that Yes and Genesis's weren't overly progressive, so it's funny that when the 80's came both turned to playing pop/rock

The Beatles (though not a prog band, they went from skiffle to a psychedelic and somewhat avant-garde band)

Talk Talk ofcourse! They went from poppy '80s music to great prog, and almost single handedly inventing post rock!

i've heard that before, but i've yet to hear their "post rock" material. what manner of post-rock is it? the long, meloncholic, instrumental type? that's my favourite.

i don't know about Rush. I think of late they've been moving into a direction of more standard hard rock, albeit a bit deeper than your average hard rock.

Tool and Radiohead, I suppose. The popular Radiohead progressed from being a poppy alt/rock band to being a rather less obviously poppy alt. rock band. And as for Tool. It started as more of a thrashy alt. metal band, and grew into an equally trashy alt. metal band.
Just kidding about what I wrote, both bands grew more progressive/ experimental than when they started. |

Never started out as mainstream, but do you think The Mars Volta is getting more complex since the debut?

I refer to EARLY Rush. Surely you would say that their third album was much more progressive than their first?

I'm disappointed - neither of these players are avant-garde! Al di Meola.
haha i know. but the poll itself is avant-garde
|

Oh definitely. The first album is just standard classic rock. Sorry, I misunderstood you and I was thinking of the direction they have went in ever since Hemispheres. But yes, I certainly agree about early Rush. |

Incubus. They started off as trendy nu-metal (but with nice little extras), went into more melodic hard rock, then started experimenting with prog before diving headlong into Avant-ish prog-ish rock. They do extended versions of their songs live with longer solos and improvisations.
Deftones took a more subtle and abstract approach to progress but one can definitely hear the change on their albums. First one was horrible, the second one was light-years better, the third was spectacular, the fourth wasn't as good but had great ideas, and the newest one sounds like dreamy post-metal. I'm not a Led Zep fan at all, but their music did get more interesting and experimental over the years.
Although fairly progressive from the start, Hendrix's music became more progressive over the course of his short career. Bowie would be a good example of someone shifting between pop and progressive many times over the course of his career. Miles' music became more and more progressive till his creativity peaked in the mid-70s, and then he gradually became more pop, but with a strong progressive influence. Todd Rundgren started out pop had a brief progressive phase and then went back.
