Topic: Rush fans dont like ELP !? Posted: March 15 2005 at 04:02 |
Apologies for starting yet another thread about ELP but I've noticed that ELP are getting a bit of a slating from at least 3 Rush fans on one of the other ELP threads.Assumming that they are not the same person this seems strange to me.After all Rush and ELP are both 3 peice bands.Rush were influenced by ELP(as well as other bands) to some extent according to Neil Peart. They even adopted the keyboard lead approach that ELP had on Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows and became the 'ELP for the eighties' in my view.Actually I have a great deal of admiration for Rush and count them as one of many favourite bands BUT that said ELP came FIRST.They were one of the innovators that paved the way for bands such as Rush. This doesn't mean you have to like them of course but I find the ignorance about ELP very strange. Is this just a form of denial from Rush fans who don't like the fact that there were other 3 peice bands that came before their favourite band??! (And I don't want any answers along the lines that ELP fans are obsessed and always plugging their favourite band etc...thanks)

Were Rush influenced by ELP ??? = Not heard that one before...However if you listen to Genesis Archives - (The lamb I think) there is a fill in piece that sounds remarkably like the start of Xanadu by rush (With the guitar and tubular bells I think) - Did Rush witness a Genesis Concert and did they get the start of Xanadu from Genesis !!!
You must listen to archives to participate in this post - Listen and be amazed !!!

I'm not sure what you're getting at, Richard...
I am both a Rush fan and ELP fan. In fact, I got into both bands in high school, within a year of each other (Rush before ELP).
Previously, I'd been obsessed with Tangerine Dream. Rush and ELP took over (until other bands did likewise for me, in the '90s and beyond). But that said, my singular obsession with any of the bands I like continues to this day!
Peart was influenced by Palmer, but he was also influenced by Ginger Baker and Buddy Rich. Rush as a whole wasn't really influenced by ELP so much as UK rock in general (prog and non-prog).
Actually I have a great deal of admiration for Rush and count them as one of many favourite bands BUT that said ELP came FIRST.They were one of the innovators that paved the way for bands such as Rush. |
I think you're trying to prove a point where it's unnecessary to do so. Rush isn't a keyboard trio like The Nice/ELP. The original power trio is Cream. Trapeze (with Glenn Hughes) also pre-dates Rush. Geddy and Alex also count Zeppelin among their early influences.
Is this just a form of denial from Rush fans who don't like the fact that there were other 3 peice bands that came before their favourite band??! |
No, I think it's just that the Rush fans you're referring to aren't ELP fans, that's all.

Rush are my favoutite band, and I actually quite like a lot of what I've heard of ELP. I will tease on ELP threads and take the p!ss a bit. For some reason it seems that some ELP fans, notably Karn, are very over sensitive about their band of choice. It therefore makes it easy to take the p!ss and derive a certain degree of pleasure from doing so. I am quite happy to laugh at Rush's ridiculous image, and can happily accept that they are not for everyone.
Rush biggest influence was Led Zeppelin. They also liked Yes, and I'm sure they liked ELP too, but their roots are in rock 'n' roll and blues. Even when keyboards became more prominant in the Rush sound they bore no resembelence to ELP. They had none of the classical pomposity of ELP, and were always a predominantly guitar band. Even when the keyboads were at their most cheesy and prominant - 1983 - 1988 - the guitar was still there working out hard in the background. They are both three piece bands. Thats where the connection stops IMO.

This is true that ELP fans do like other bands & should be visa versa..
The UK based ELP magazine Impressions survey
we asked the fans to tell us which were their favourite alternative band. It was no big surprise that YES gained the most votes with 37 points. The Nice, Jethro Tull and Rush came second on 11 votes, King Crimson and Genesis third on 9 votes and ASIA came joint sixth with Marillion and Kansas. So predictably, most votes were gained by fellow prog rock bands.

Actually this is exactly what all the ELP hoopla is about... He's not the only one who's doing it.. and he's definitely not the only one who's enjoying it..

I am an ELP fan first with RUSH a VERY close second. I also love YES and early (until Hackett left) Genesis.
All this bickering is getting very silly.
Are there any adults on here?

rush fans who dislike ELP is a pure coincidence;
it is more probable that ELP fans hate Triumvirat. Hein, richarh and 3f8tes?

I love ELP's music. I also like Triumvirate and Ars Nova, both heavily influenced by ELP. I think that you really can't pigeonhole everyone's taste around here. And that is a good thing.

Look let's get one thing straight-I do not dislike ELP!!
I can forgive Threefates for her reaction because in my opinion, she doesn't understand our (British)humour (she doesnt even believe it is humour) and we dont really understand whether she is just "yanking our chain" (no pun(s) intended) or is totally serious.
Karnevil, however,is a different animal. He has latched on to the apparent antipathy to ELP and is milking it for all it is worth.
Evidence:
1.The amount of posts that appear to over stress his devotion & admiration for ELP.
2.He has been on the Official Greg lake website but has only posted 6 times! If he wanted a place to eulogise his favourite band surely that is the right place to do it-but no,just 6 posts! He joined the site after joining this forum.....
So Mr Andre, Yorkshire cabinet-maker it is time to come clean....

I guess it's possible that Rush was influenced by ELP, but I don't really hear it too much. After all, ELP was unquestionably a 'keyboards first' band, and Rush songs are generally based on guitar changes...the keyboards are a late-comer to Rush's sound, and used in a completely different fashion (lots of synth pads with the occasional lead, versus Emerson's complex intertwining keyboard parts).
I guess if you're not a big fan of keyboard-driven music, you'll be more likely to like Rush and dislike ELP (and if you have something against hard rock the opposite might be true), but I don't think there's any specific animosity between both camps.

Hello Mr Reed the Lover of ELP & other inferior bands.
Come clean!
You'll notice on the Greg lake forum that it's a complete different kettle of fish to this forum..very very calm with arguing being non existant..but believe it or not i can't get on with the forum..Nothing intrests me you see.I'm not a Keith,Greg,Carl solo fan & find the individul members forums really strange.I only love the band as a collective & haven't come across a dedicate ELP forum.
But there is something about this forum that's very attractive.Maybe you!
So there you go an opening to stick your 2112 wise cracks into.

Now do you understand?????
The feeling you get off the fan sites is the same feeling we get from your constant,vomit-inducing,over promotion of ELP!!! It is not the fact that you love ELP it is the way you portray your devotion..... Halleluia!!!
