Hi All --

I'm new to this site -- haven't even posted a review yet  but they will be coming.

I'm wondering why there are no XTC reviews on the site?  I realize they started out as more of a pop band -- carrying on in the tradition of the Beatles -- but more of their later stuff has a definite prog bent to it.

They ain't exactly proto-prog but more post-prog.

Jim

Post-prog? good lord man, you've only got one post under your belt and already you've ignited a fire LOL. I can see that bitter fight now, considering how proto prog and related are regularly put up for execution.

As much as I adore XTC (and their Neo-psyche incarnation The Dukes of Stratosphear) - I think they are one of those bands who should be highly recommneded to any lovers of progressive music (along with many of the lesser-known 80's bands), but should remain outside the archive looking in.

Fair enough.  It just seemed that if there is room for Jefferson Airplane, etc., there might be room for XTC.

Our old fiend (sorry friendLOL) Maani was very keen for XTC to be added. If you look back far enough, you should find him promoting them!

Apart from Maani, there's never been much of a push for them to be included. It will be interesting to see if that has changed.

Out of curiosity, I checked a few months back Drums And Wires, Black Sea and English Settlement (the three always mentioned) but I still found nothing more prog than when I had heard them back in the 80's. Good drummer, but that's about it.

They have no prog ethics as far as I can hear.

Now that's a mind opener. I always wondered why I haven't made it to collaborator yet, but now I know: I first have to learn how ethics sound... LOL

They don't belong, imho. They are one of those bands (like The Police, Talking Heads, or even The Stranglers, imho of course) that got carried along with punk's slipstream but were more musically sophisticated/able than the majority of punk bands and into the 80s their music didn't resemble anything close to punk. But they aren't prog or related either, imho.

XTC? Probably the finest English pop band after The Beatles. I love them, but I can't think of anything remotely prog about them. I've never seen them described as a prog band, so a definite no.

What exactly do you mean by post-prog? Are there any specific musical or stylistic features to this genre. I merely ask out of curiosity.

XTC gets my vote for "the world's best band outside the Prog Archives"!

And let it stay that way.

Um, post-prog was a bad choice of words.  To these ears, XTC have carried on in the Beatles pop tradition.  But they came after the 'classic' prog era, so they can't be proto.

The albums I have in mind when I think of them as prog-related are particularly Skylarking and perhaps Apple Venus.

many have carried on the Beatles tradition but very few managed to capture it - least of all XTC - 80's pop band consigned to the bargain bin of pop history! LOL

ethics or aesthetics..... if you wish!

no long songs, no tricky time sigs, no tempo changes, no challenging lyrics, no superb artwork (maybe the one with the ship) .....
