Well, as far as the choices on the list goes, NIK TURNER.
But by far, my favorite sax player is JOHN ZORN. It's a crime he is not on the list, as most of the choices don't even come close to ZORN. The omission of Lindsay Cooper, I also consider criminal. |
Do your own poll, that's it!!

I was informed of that too.!!!
I saw 21st century last time they tour with Ian and he looked so alive and healthy. He was so talented and a very underrated drummer. Iguess when it is time to go it is time to go. So sad.!

DIDIER MALHERBE; Gong
Family You got to listen to your GONG's albums more often. Didier is a master on his instruments. The only on that list that can be compare is Mr. Shorter, however I did not chooce him because he is a jazz player.

I forgot to mention that Mel Collins has made significant contributions to Jakko Jakszyk's recent double CD release 'The Bruised Romantic Glee Club' of which I know Dick Heath is an admirer. If you're interested there is an old topic under 'recommendations' that discusses this release or just get on to Jakko's web site dedicated to the album. You won't be disappointed - you may just discover some hidden treasure because this release with some of progs current best contributing has been sadly overlooked.

I feel it's a little strange putting Shorter amongst this group due to his heavy fusion/jazz involvement and in that idiom he's a superior player.
Mel Collins and Ian McDonald have done fabulous work more recently with '21st. Century Schizoid Band' arguably superior to what they did on the same songs with KC, though their work with '21st.CSB' is live. Woodwind enthusiasts should check it out.
Yes, Keith Gemmel of 'Audience' is an often overlooked player who has produced some wonderfully amospheric solos particularly on 'Friend's...' and 'House....'.
Jack Lancaster was a great player, but he probably was not associated with prog. enough. Some of his work with 'Blodwyn Pig' was great and he was involved in the eclectic 'Marscape' project with Robin Lumley and others members of 'Brand X'. So is Jimmy Hastings who has already been mentioned.
Dick Heckstall-Smith and Michael Brecker RIP. It's no sin to mention them in the same breath.

Lots of great players on this list, so that choosing a favourite is not easy at all. However, I picked out Traffic's Chris Wood - both because I actually love his playing, and because someone else does too... . Other favs of mine are, of course, McDonald, Collins, the underrated Andy McKay and the sadly unmentioned Jimmy Hastings.

Ian McDonald. What he did with King Crimson in 1969 was unheard of at the time in rock music. The sounds produced like the Pan-like flute in "I Talk To The Wind," and the wild, free-form jazz-like sax of "21st Century Schizoid Man" were never heard before in rock. This was shocking, and quite forward thinking at the time. There may be better woodwind players in rock, but Mr. McDonald led the pack, and cleared the path ahead. I know we are talking woodwinds here, but what about what he did for the mellotron too? Would that instrument be so highly loved in prog if it wasn't for Ian? |
Well-said, my good man! Also, his recording-overdubbing of woodwinds, et al, to get the caliope effect on 'In the Court...' is superb and inspiring as well....

Kinda true if only on a technical level. Taste-wise, the competition is usually tighter.

John Hackett can sure play that flute. He's almost as impressive as his big bro.
Didier Malherbe is my favorite from the list. Gong had some scorching sax solos when he was in the band

Anyway, there's a lot of really good musicians on the list (and I really have no way of knowing who's more talented) but I think Mel Collins merits another vote.
So here I go....
bing! Mel's up to 5!

Mel Collins and Ian McDonald, so you'll have to pick two
Where's Johannes Pappert (Kraan)? His use of effects on saxophone was amazing, I think he would have deserved to be in the poll...

by far the best musican of the bunch is wayne shorter. but then again its probably not fair to compare legitimate jazz musicians to rock musicains (albeit very talented and innovative rock musicians).
