I was thinking that maybe a good way to spread the word about unknown groups would be to have a "feature band" section on the front page. It could be for every month, or week or whatever.  Since there seems to be a huge increase of visitors on the page, this would help lesser known bands to get discovered. For example, the band of the week could be: "Comus": There could be a picture, a little about the group, and links to bios, discography, reviews, and mp3's.Just a suggestion, but i think it could work wonders!

Awesome suggestion.

How about... Laconda Delle Fate?

Well it works for drawing attention to the featured band, the first thing I did today on this site was check it out, and read the reviews. I like the idea.

In this format it doesn't really add to the archives however. All it does is direct the attention of the visitors to this band, and guides them to the reviews and general information about this band. It would be nice (IMO) if this format was extended with some new (vital) information about the band.

Depending on long you would like to keep the Featured Band featured before another band is selected there are some (interactive?) possibilities.

1. How would you like to select which band get's featured.
         - by nomination by Forummembers,
         - led by current events (bands that are in the news, released a new album or whatever)
         - by genre (every so often another subgenre highlighted by a featured band)

2. What extra's could be added to featured bands.
         - Interview with members of the band (we had interview with Rick Wakeman)
         - discussion forum dedicated to the band (good guidelines how to discuss, and what)
         - MP3 download
         - extended summary of the band, a more indepth analysis of the band (can also be in the format of a discussion forum)
         - photo - gallery
         - family tree (related bands, influences etc.)

3. Archive function to store the previous Featured Bands, so their still be a link to them and potential additional information. after the bands are not featured anymore.

My idea would be to have a monthly change of featured subgenre, with one or two featured bands in that period. The genres are selected by The administrators, and the forummembers can vote for, or nominate a band to be featured. In the case of the nominate by forummembers possibility, you can expect that the forummember who nominates a band has something to say about that band, or can share some more insights on the band that can be used to include as an extra about the band (photo-gallery, Family tree or an extended summary, or whatever is appropriate)

I'm just thinking out loud here

Wow Guys !!

I feel like a superstar reviewer because I get quoted on the Main page of the Archives. Sooooo Proud!!!! And I owe it to your idea and Max's judgment. It won't be long before it reaches my brains and soon I'll be as pompous as Greg Lake. (just kidding 3Fates)

All kidding aside, this idea is great and Tuxon's ideas also, but who does the writting job for the extras on his second point and how tro make sure we have the right info?

I would agree that a band stays on for a period of one month but maybe that two of them at the same time but different genres/categories. This would only make 24 featured bands a year but the point is to make this for obscure bands who diserve to be discovered  and from what era they are. I have in mind some twenty groups from the 70's (see the Obscure Prog Band poll/thread )  but cannot think that this Featured Band would be for Dream Theater or lesser-known actual  bands such as RPWL or PAATOS. Newer groups have other means to get discovered and I would not really consider late 80's & early 90's groups yet eligible( I am thinking of almost forgotten Asgard (Ital) that is simply too derivative of Marillion). Question of credibility. This first band (Comus) suggestion is the perfect example of a band that really EVERYONE must know...

The selection of these bands could be made from a poll but the groups proposed in the list come from a concertation between the admins.

Just a few thoughts

Excellent Max, well done.

Does my mind play tricks on me, or did the site used to have this in the early days?

Personally, I'd like to see the featured band change regularly, say once a week. Most of us access the site on a regular basis, and it's always good to see something different. I'd suggest a mixture of lesser known bands, and better known ones. New visitors coming across the site may not be aware that some bands they like fall within our boundaries, and seeing them featured would give them a warm cosy feeling.LOL

The idea of quoting from reviews is a masterstroke, as it will encourage people to think about what they are writing!

Indeed the quote idea is good, to show who made the quote is naturally good. But should there be a link to the reviewer whose quote is used? I found myself reading through Sean's reviews (all 1112 of them) before I realised it had nothing to do with the Featured Artist (Comus).

I found it interesting to see what he has written about several bands so my time wasn't wasted, but people expect to read about Comus, when they follow such a link (I think).

(good reviews Sean)

This is true.  I wrote the bio for them and pretty much had to piece together tiny bits of information from various sources into something semi-coherent.
