Topic: Argent Posted: July 27 2006 at 08:12 |
Came across an album by ARGENT called CIRCUS A few weeks ago, and found it much my suprise to be a brilliant prog rock album! I was really suprised as the only thing I have heard by them before was "Hold Your Head UP".
I totally recommend them to any one!

One of the very first albums I ever bought Was Argent's "In Deep" and it was great. Sadly, lost it some while ago but I am very fond of this band. Rod Argent ran a keyboard shop I recall reading somewhere, anyone any idea of his/their whereabouts now?
And has anyone any idea of the whereabouts of my copy of In Deep?

Argent had a classic era that ran from All Together Now until the Encore Live album and included Nexus and In Deep
After the live album, Russ Ballard left the group and he was replaced by two guys (one was John Verity) and they made the circus album. That record is usually not highly regarded as their previous one, and maybe partly because after In Deep and Nexus, it was difficult for them to keep the high standards
I must say I have not heard this record in over twenty years, and I did not have a good opinion. I remember I was upset that Ballard was not in the group (he was an important song provider and one of the two singers)
Maybe I should give this Circus record another chance.

Rod Argent and Colin Blundstone still record and tour together occasionally. Anyone have any reviews of their stuff?

I have two Argent albuns and I find them quite good. Ring of Hands and
All Together Now are not much progressive, but it is a mix of good rock
'n roll songs and great organ performances.

Have never heard anything by R. Argent and C. Blunstone but I did hear an album about 15 years ago called "Red House" that was by Rod Argent. It's kind of rare but definitely worth checking out.

Poor band, not really Prog at all.
Almost as bad as BJH, but not quite!
In the early 70's when i was listening to ELP, Genesis, Yes etc.
My old Mum used to listen to these along with Shirley Bassey and the Moody Blues!!!!

Meaning you have never heard the Zombies
Actually, I rented the double live Zombies from last year and found it quite boring.
But they play some five Argent songs in the set.

I don't think anything Argent recorded ever approached 'Oddesey and Oracle' that The Zombies did in terms of innovation or cohesiveness, but I will say that their early albums that I've heard are all very solid indeed. My own favourite of their songs is the monolithic 'Coming Of Kohoutek/Twice Around The Sun/Infinite Wanderer' suite. Anyone who says they aren't prog should listen to this and eat their words as it runs like the best thing ELP never recorded. Their best album is probably the live one, 'Encore'. I've not heard their John Verity era stuff, but I had a few solo albums of his on the cheap and they were all very uninspired, imo.

He toured with Ringo this summer. Did great versions of the great Zombies songs "She's Not There" and "Time Of The Season" and a similarly great version of Argent's "Hold Your Head Up"

The original (and very creepy) cover of THE STEVE HOWE ALBUM...hint...look in the water...

I far prefer the Zombies, but Argent had some great stuff. I really like Circus, though. Highwire and Trapeze have some great jamming, and Clown has an amazing synth solo.

I've got Best Of Argent which has the original 'God Gave Rock N Roll To You'.Good band for sure.
btw Russ Ballard appeared briefly on stage with Greg Lake during GL's 2005 tour. They both play in a charity band along with Roger Daltrey and a guy called Richard Desmond who I think owns Express Newspapers.

I am not their lawyers but I believe that this judgment is an overall one.
While they had some really excellent prog moments, they also went for the hits >>> God Gave RnR to you etc...
Argent can sometimes be light on prog contents, but are indisputably prog anyway.
the double live album Encore have all their best moments (except for two excellent prog tracks) and is all you need for an intro or even as a casual fan.
