I'm listening to this album now for the second time and I'm not sure yet what to think of it. It seems a bit dense or something. Multiple votes allowed.

It's awful. Peter Nicholls singing is like fingers on a blackboard.

I've never seen so many poll options for just one album.

Well, it is a double album so..... Plus, you get your moneys worth with me. Also, don't forget I've set it to multiple poll options so you can vote for three if you want.

I did. I love it. Road Of Bones is a close second in my heart. Two of my top ten favorite albums since 2000. I listen to one of them at least once a month.

I said it was their best album a while back, although I haven't voted in this poll yet, mainly because there are so many options to choose from.

Sorry Paul. I don't mean to confuse anyone. I'll try not to have so many next time.

For some reason, I could never get into IQ. I know they are good musicians, but their music never appealed to me, which I myself find quite weird.

I'm easily confused at my age. I have voted now though. I voted the same way as Cindy.

It's ok. I'm sometimes confused about why I'm confused.

Resistance is futile? No, resistance is inevitable.
I don't like to be negative, but at the same I would rather show my support for people's efforts at posting topics/polls than not post at all if I have the time, and I would hope that people would try to do the same for me. Or maybe not, and maybe I should just keep my mouth shut, but this does kind of fit with the options. I had only heard bits and bobs going thought bits and pieces of the track, I have just done so again and based on my all too limited listening it sounds shallow, predictable, too slick production wise, and too AORish for me. And it seems to take this alt metal influence (correct me if I'm wrong) that I don't like. While I am not a fan of Neo-Prog, there is music I do like in the category. I would take the much maligned Nomzamo over this. I don't think it's a bad album per se but if anything maybe over-produced, does sound vapid to these ears, and the lyrics are annoying me, and it does not sound very innovative or original to these ears. Voting other: Not listened to properly but clearly not my thing. Conclusion: This album is much more resistible than irresistible. Edited by Logan - September 23 2024 at 17:20 |

I didn't get into IQ... till Road Of Bones. Their last two albums amaze me. IQ's previous albums don't grip me...for some reason.

Ever is excellent. Try that one, even if the early ones don't grab you. |

Tricky. It's always been a rollercoaster with this band for me. Their first 2 albums are great and pushed solidly back against the system of horrible overproduced music that was mostly the 80's. I adored Tales From The Lush Attic and The Wake and still like them it a lot. Then Nomzamo came and it was like being shot through the heart for me. They had joined the system and my last great hope for music had died. It was over 10 years later that I rediscovered them while looking through the 'I's at HMV and low and behold there was a new double album with interesting artwork (Subterranea). I retraced my steps with the missing 2 albums and enjoyed both Are You Sitting Comfortably and Ever. Ever was to become my favourite album by them.
Over the years I have pushed them a lot although you do get the 'Peter Nicholls is too winey' brigade who don't like them at all. On the whole they seem to have gained a massive amount of respect in the prog community. They never became big in any respect though and missed the main chance back in 1985 when Nicholls decided to leave and they simply couldn't replace him properly (Paul Menel being a pop singer and lyricist). Thankfullly Nicholls came back. I enjoy most of their catologue. Martin Orford leaving in the 00's was a blow but he was eventually replaced by jazz fusion keyboard player Neil Durrant who like Orford is a quiet fellow but a tremendous talent. This is really his album and is playing and also brilliant programming and understanding of atmosphere and texture is second to none. Also worth noting that Paul Cook came back into the band (after Andy Edwards one album stint on Frequency) a better player. Road Of Bones is often seen as their best nowadays. Personally I put Resistance in their top five but not top three ( The Wake, Ever and Frequency occupy that). I would then put Tales From The Lush Attic at No 4 and then Resistance. It's a massive expansive work that needs a lot of commitment. Looking foward to the next album which is scheduled (unofficially) for an early 2025 release. The two March dates at Bury are already sold out! This band progs on!

It's an album that haunted me for months. I actually prefer the second halve (the last three sides of the lp). The Great Spirit Way is my favorite epic by IQ. As much as I love the album now, it was a very tough nut to crack at first. It sounds bleak, moody and brooding.
The only thing I don't like about it, is the heavy compressed sound, which makes it an unpleasant listen in the living room. |

I really enjoy this album but it still wouldn't rank in my top 3 from IQ.
I guess i could best describe it as patchy. I love the longer tracks on it, with the Great Spirit Way being probably by second favorite IQ track, but not all of the shorter are as impressive. I see there's the option for "should've been a single album" and this is where I feel it gets tricky. I wouldn't mind losing a few tracks, but what I would keep would still run to more than a single CD.
