I have trouble finding quite recent films that I enjoy. I'm sure there are lots that I'm just missing, and I lack the attention span that I had.

Some off the top of my head that I think highly of or just enjoyed very much are:

The Lobster
Under the Skin
Parasite
High-Rise
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Hereditary
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Border
Apostle
The Girl With All the Gifts
Train to Busan
"Questions are a burden to others; answers a prison for oneself" (The Prisoner, 1967).

I'm a fan of Ashgar Farhadi's work. Maybe "About Elly" is the best but that's 2009; the following "A Separation", "The Past", "The Salesman" are all great, if you like complex psychological films that is, showing some interesting sides and tensions of Iranian society in the process (not so much The Past which is set in France but that doesn't make it weaker).

One of the best films I have seen in recent years is the Indian The Court, free here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONJI6z5Gxug&t=426s (I've seen a number of very good Indian films in the last 10 years).
Also "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" was great, and from Russia "How I Ended This Summer" and "Leviathan". The Argentinian episode film "Wild Tales" was good fun.

Thanks! I've wanted to watch A Separation having heard good things about it. I should check out all of those Ashgar Farhadi works. Will look into all of those you mentioned. Will probably watch The Court soon since it's so readily available. I haven't watched very much Indian film, much of it being so melodramatic. The Court, though, looks like it would very much interest me, especially since I'm very interested in legal matters and justice systems. Been listening to a podcast made my lawyers called Wrongful Convictions of late -- kind of makes me want to rejoin the Civil Liberties organisation I belonged to.

I definitely feel like I haven't had enough non-English language films in my diet when it comes to more recent films, especially since leaving Vancouver proper which had some excellent libraries and art house cinemas.

Other good recent Indian non-Bollywood films:
Farhadi by the way is also interested in the justice system, particularly in A Separation.

^ I've seen a few of those, surprised that Doctor Sleep didn't spring to mind. I prefer The Shining film (A favourite of mine), but I thought this was very good. Haven't read the King novel of Doctor Sleep yet.

One I really liked, and also saw in the cinema, is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

And I like one called Midsommar, and The Babadook I loved, and The Witch. Quite a few horror films I liked of recent years.

While I definitely preferred the novel, I appreciated the film version of Never Let Me Go. I enjoyed Snowpiercer.

Oh, and I love the anime film, A Silent Voice. I was deeply moved by it.

^ Nice! I'm gonna watch a Chinese movie hours later this day, but I have to sleep first. LOL I forgot The Ritual from your country. I rated it 8/10.

^ Oh, yeah, I like The Ritual too (that I had thought to mention, but then promptly forgot). And now I just forgot another that I was about to mention as I was writing that last sentence. Oh, yeah, a Canadian film called Anitiviral by the son of Canada's body horror meister David Cronenberg.

No doubt a ton I must have liked and enjoyed from the period which will come back to me.

One thing I regret, especially regarding my work, is that I don't have an encyclopedic memory at all. So, what follows is rather arbitrary and I probably forgot some great films, but these are some that stood out for me this last decade:

I second the Asghar Farhadi films (up till and not including Le passé/The Past), and if you like Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, you may also like Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Winter Sleep and The Wild Pear Tree.

Some other really great, non-American, titles of the last decade:
Balada triste de trompeta, Alex de la Iglesia (very baroque, but splendid)
The Turin Horse, Belà Tarr (if you like it slow and in B&W... A rare masterpiece, imo)
Blancanieves, Pablo Berger (an original fairy tale...)
Le piel que habito, Pedro Almodovar
Borgman, Alex van Warmerdam
Mistérios de Lisboa, Raul Ruiz
The Wild Goose Lake, Diao Yi'nan
Black Coal, Thin Ice, Diao Yi'nan
A Touch of Sin, Jia Zhangke
Burning, Chang-dong Lee
Right Now, Wrong Then, Sang-soo Hong
Uncle Boonmee, Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Cemetery of Splendour, Apichatpong Weerasethakul

To name a few...

Pretty good, too. I liked In The Loop even more, but that's 2009.

Yes, I was thinking of that one, too. Your taste seems connected to mine so I should really look into some of your suggestions that I don't know yet (which is most of them).

^ What counts for most of these is: the bigger the screen, the better... (Bela Tarr's and Apichatpong Weerasethakul's films will not hold on a small screen with surrounding lights and noises...).

This one popped up in my mind and I'm quite sure you will like it, Greg, if you haven't seen it yet: The Voices, by Marjane Satrapi (2014; it could also have been suggested in your earlier "off-beat films" thread). It's a kind of dark horror comedy, quite original and real fun to watch!

I haven't watched that many, but I really enjoyed Hail Caesar by the Coen brothers. It is from 2016 I think.

2. John Carter (2012)
3. Epic (2013)
4. Inside Out (2015)

Hi,

I have had a hard time keeping up with film in the last 10 years. The availability is not very good, and there really is not a whole lot of discussion, or mention, of the director, or what makes the film special, and for me this is tough ... looking to see something that is not listed for a whole lot of special this or that, except that it is listed in various people's favorite listings.

I haven't had t TV for ... probably around 12 or 13 years, and I don't miss it, and I do not watch a lot of the hero stuff from the "geebees" (as called in Brazil before), or a lot of the "top" hits, by film companies that really do not care about anything but the bottom line and their fascism towards distribution and advertising to convince you that it is a good film so you will pay for it.

Here is where Europe is better and more important, but even there, I have not been able to frequent the Portland Film Festival for 15 years, when they stopped being a fan of Pedro Almodovar, and started showing what was obviously 2nd rate and 3rd rate materials by nobody in general. Besides having one bad eye and seeing double, movie theaters are now just about dead, and I am not sure that many of them will ever come up again and show the far out stuff that the world has to offer, because they need to try and recoup some money from the bad days, and will try to do so with the better known materials. Already two of the usual "art films" places here in Portland, are showing nothing but old crap! Nothing new!

Being that I was brought up to know actors and directors, all of a sudden not even seeing anything listed is weird for me, specially when it comes to watching something ... I can't help even pass through half of these on Amazon because nothing in the listing seems to wake up my mind. I know at 70 we sleep a little more, but I find it sad all the same.\\I'm now looking for Suitkees's suggestions .. thanks for listing directors.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

'Raw' by Julia Ducournau (I certainly butchered the name here), it is from 2016 or 2017, don't remember exactly, and features the gorgeous rising star of French cinema - Garance Marillier!
