Ingurgitating Oblivion are a German progressive death metal band, founded by guitarist and vocalist Florian Engelke in 1995 as Of Trees and Orchids. Engelke was joined by guitarist/bassist Sascha Hermersdorf, lead vocalist Karsten Schöning, and drummer Dirk Janssen. Together the quartet released two albums before Engelke changed the band's name to Ingurgitating Oblivion in 2001. The Cadence and Perspective in Desolation EP would follow in the same year, and over the next four years the band's lineup would shift, with Florian Neumeyer replacing Janssen on drums, Christian Pfeil taking over bass and Ulrich Kreienbrink on vocals. Their 2005 LP Voyage Towards Abhorrence continued the avant-garde approach of Of Trees and Orchids while pushing it in more brutal directions, with their style described as a mix between Gorguts, Immolation and Morbid Angel. The band would only release their sophomore album, Continuum of Absence, nearly a decade later in 2014, with Ingo Neugebauer having replaced Neumeyer.

Ingurgitating Oblivion's third album, 2017's Vision Wallows in Symphonies of Light, was a demonstrable advance in songwriting ambition and execution, with the band paired down to just Engelke and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Bojarowski, along with session musicians Norbert Müller on guitars, Jan Ferdinand on guitars and vibraphone and Defeated Sanity drummer Lille Gruber filling out the lineup. A fourth album is scheduled to be released in early 2022. Ingurgitating Oblivion's gripping and innovative death metal will appeal to listeners of Gorguts, Ad Nauseam, Convulsing, Baring Teeth, Atheist and Ulcerate.

As Of Trees and Orchids:

"Fragmente aus dem Fließenden" (1998)
"Thought-Cathedral" (2000)

As Ingurgitating Oblivion:

"Voyage Towards Abhorrence" (2005)

"Continuum of Absence" (2014)

"Vision Wallows in Symphonies of Light" (2017)

I discovered these guys before the plague hit and they blew me away. Some groups take a while to find their footing but IO were weird and fully-formed back when they were Of Trees and Orchids. Vision Wallows in Symphonies of Light is just magnificent.

LOL Can't argue with you there. Consider Gorguts, too - like the Beatles, extraordinarily influential, but rubbish band name (or maybe it's the best band name, considering the field of death metal).

As an old death metal fan I think that single word band names like Cynic and Death work best but they may have all been taken by now.

Big smile Good point, but I don't think the well has run dry just yet - consider Eximperituserqethhzebibšiptugakkathšulweliarzaxułum from Belarus (https://eximperitus.bandcamp.com/)!
