I really like that 1970s, moody, atmospheric synthesizer sound that Tangerine Dream did so well. Anyone have any suggestions for bands that do anything similar? Thanks! |

did you try the solo albums of Edgar Froese? if not, I especially
recommend "Epsilon in Malaysian Pale". Klaus Schulze is another artist
you should try. Michael Hoenig's "Dparture from the Northern Wasteland"
is also in that vein. Ash Ra Tempel and the Cosmic Jokers are a little
different, but still close enough to it. the first album of Ashra too

Ash Ra Tempel is the band that came closer to the sound of TD. The
band's first album is for sure one of the best I already heard...

And above all, is punk

I tested last.fm's knowledge and asked for music similar to Tangerine Dream, and this was the first track that I got: Klaus Schulze - Timewind - Wahnfried 1883 Not bad. |

Mainly the solo material from Klaus Schulze and Edgar Froese. Also Finnish electronic sonic explorers Nemesis but I reckon their albums are nearly impossible to get from anywhere else than Finland. |

Next track on my last.fm player: Steve Hillage - Salmon Song. A little supertrampish ... but after a few minutes it segues into a cool synth-driven "dreamy" soundscape. Edited by MikeEnRegalia |

also try the music of Conrad Schnitzler ("Blau", "Rot") if you want to get in touch with something more in the vein of Tangerine Dream's experimental proto-eletronic era (Zeit, Alpha Centauri...) about Schulze I advise you "Irrlicht" and "Cyborg" for embryonic electronic/ organ works and his classic analog synth albums "Mirage" / "Moondawn" / "X" |

^ From non German bands, Heldon & Richard Pinhas played a fusion between fripp's guitar style and hypnotic synth arrengements. I advise you to hear the chaotic and moody "un reve sans consequence spécial" among others. |

a warning about Conrad Schnitzler: his music has mostly been published privately, in very small editions of about 500 or even less. some of it only in tape form. it will not be easy to get hold of some of his output. I am pretty sure I could not write a complete discography (or more like tapography in his case), though I am quite knowledgable in Krautrock

That's a problem for many people - most Krautrock albums are almost impossible to find. Maybe as vinyl, but for a person like me who switched to CDs long ago, it IS impossible. I can only recommend http://www.last.fm once again - Install their radio player, and make it play similar music to any popular Krautrock / Progressive Electronic artist like Tangerine Dream. |

Steve Hillage, Ozric Tentacles and Gong have that sort of vibe about them, although there tends to be a rock sensibility to their music as well.
