Coldplay

I'm actually in agreement with the statement that Coldplay is for 14 year old school girls but for an entirely different reason because it was ME who was a 14year old school girl when I discovered the beauty of Coldplay. However...all the other girls in my dull generic-thinking single-sex school hated Coldplay and mocked me. They were too into Hip-hop, Rap and Green Day. Get the gist of what I mean??

The truth is that I ADORE Coldplay. If it wasn't for Chris Martins romantic lyrics and emotionally driven voice then I'd probably have killed myself while having to go to such a tasteless hell-hole of a school and living in such a community.  (sorry to be overly-dramatic)

YET... Coldplay may have good guitar riffs and chordal progression and a lovely sleepy-voiced leader but that's as far as the similarities with Radiohead go. I love Radiohead (who are a little bit darker in their themes and experimental than CP) too but *neither* are prog! Just because something is fantastic doesn't mean it's in the prog-rock style. Someone on these forums said that there's a difference between being 'progressive' and being in the 'Progressive' Rock genre...and they were absolutely right. Don't get me wrong- some of Radiohead's songs certainly sound like progressive rock (eg: Paranoid Android is unmistakably one) but Thom yorke has really confessed to disliking the idea of Progessive Rock as a genre all together. Coldplay and Radiohead are BRIT POP! There's really no two ways about it.

But I can see why you'rd question the possibilities when after listening to Genesis' Carpet Crawlers then Coldplay's Sparks, you could almost call then one-in-the-same.

My ex-bf is into SOAD. God help him. I wouldn't recommend that type of crap to anyone unless they're just looking for beer-drinking songs or something to get high to.

I think the gist is that Colplay is not for 14 year old school girls ... you seem to be an exception. I think that 90% of the current 14 year old schoolgirls would describe Coldplay as "boring", or "lame", or "too old".

Yea, I would agree with you there. They'd much prefer to listen to IMo, Hip hop or Rap?

just cos Coldplay rip off Radiohead, who are fairly proggy, doesnt make Coldplay prog.

Well, actually, just to make a statement, I do not says that system of a down or coldplay (Although I do not remember saying anything about coldplay being for 13 year old kids...) is MADE for kids, but no matter what the intention is, it IS people from 13-16 year old mainly who listen to them. The music industry (MTV, etc...) probably aim these ages as a public with Soad.

I am 16, and all I hear is people listening to system of a down, so there is on megadeth, metallica and iron maiden. My sister, who is 13, says that everyone listen to system of a down (even a lot of girl, to impress boys probably) because they says it's 'cool'. I don't know what where the intention of soad, but that are the results...

Anyway, I can only say that the 13-15 year old kids that I know don't like SOAD. And certainly not Coldplay. But German kids are surely different ... they can't understand the lyrics, to start with.

Well, I live in Québec, which is the french part of Canada, and no one here understand the lyrics eithier (well, english is the second language here, so some might if they check in the booklet, but anyway...). I don't know your age, but I can says that these kind of music really are popular here. Maybe the fact we are over the USA, and so awfully influenced by this country, explain the popularity...

I would also says that Coldplay isn't much popular here, by the way.

Yes why not and after them we can add Blur they are progressive to, and maybe we should add Garbage and Abba a 70s Swedish  progressive disco band

No one can seriously suggest Coldplay to be prog, so you don't have to panic about it.

Just enjoy the fantastic and fresh album that goes by the name of "X&Y" .
