I think it is called solarisation and posterisation.They are photographic filter techniques.

Yep i was taught them as infred red filters for the camera.Solorisations is correct & i think sepia is a simular effect too.

also check out the remastered booklets for Pink Floyds "More" and "Obscured By Clouds" albums cos they are full of them!
