Topic: Favorite Yes songs. Posted: July 23 2005 at 03:27 |
There is the weird thing with Yes and me. I really like the band, I have most of their seventies CDs, I think albums like CttE are fantastic, but.... for the life of me, NONE of their progressive songs stand out for me. At best they score 8/10. Great albums, but never great songs. IMHO of course. In fact, within a broader pop/rock frame work, the best Yes songs from me is the much despised Owner of a lonely heart (9/10).

Although pretty much anything from the period between Time and a Word and Going for the One is superb!!

Hard for me to pick my top ten from Yes, but like most, they are all from the Yes Album through Relayer era (two are from Going For the One though). So I'll throw out my ten in chronological order:
Starship Trooper
Roundabout
Heart of the Sunrise
Close to the Edge
And You and I
Siberian Khatru [actually my favorite of the three CTTE pieces]
Revealing Science of God
Gates of Delirium
Turn of the Century
Wondrous Stories

I'm extremely partial to The Fish, that groove is sick. Steve Howe hits so heavy in it, and so does Squire. What are your favorite Yes songs? |
I'm sure that the entire thing is played on bass by Squire.

You're right (for the studio version). I think he plays the opening harmonics on some of the live versions. Either way, I wouldn't call it "heavy". Good version on Yesspeak.

My top 5 YesSongs ( now that was dificult )
South Side of The Sky
(hard Rock with the most gentle piano section in the middle)
Astral Traveller
(very strange but catchy tune, reminds me of something I cant quite
explain)
Long Distance Runaround
(Jon's voice is magical and the song is perfect)
And you And I
(is this the song where Steve Howe used the portuguese 12 string guitar?
it sure sounds like one, but wonderful song anyway)
Heart of The sunrise
(like Long Distance, Jon's voice does the trick - Sharp Distance...)
