Since discovering this website, I have heard numerous positive references to Italian Prog, but I have never found the opportunity to listen to any. Where should I begin? Please reccomend bands/albums to someone who is completely new to this "subgenre".

  • BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO (BMS) - "Io Sono Nato Libero"
  • LE ORME - "Felona e Sorona"
  • PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI (PFM) - "Per un Amico"
  • DEUS EX MACHINA - "De Republica"
  • LOCANDA DELLE FATE - "Forse Le Lucciole Non Si Amano Più"
  • MURPLE - "Io Sono Murple"
  • MALIBRAN - "The Wood of Tales"
  • ZAUBER - "Il Sogno" (although this band is considered Folk Prog, their music has beautiful symph passages)
  • FINISTERRE - "In Ogni Luogo"
  • GERMINALE - "E Il Suo Respiro Ancora Agitata Le Onde"
  • HÖSTSONATEN - "Mirrorgames"

Plenty of homework to do my friend!

Tony R - I picked this album up from Rasputin's in San Francisco a couple years ago on a whim.  Absolutely fantastic stuff!  Blew me away!  Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't heard it!

If I could only have 1 Italian prog CD, which one should I choose? I know I'll end up purchasing dozens, but I need a strong starting point.

A good place to start is with a classic album from one of the "big" names:

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso: Darwin OR Io Sono Nato Libero
Premialta Forneria Marconi: Storia di un Minuto OR Per un Amico

Or you could choose one from both of these groups.

And if you like it go for the other recommendations...

One more addition (can you still handle it, this wagonload of recommendations?):

I Giganti - Terra In Bocca - a great concept album about the mafia. Very soulful singing, like Museo Rosenbach's Zarathustra, hard rocking and lot's of different musical influences.

I actually just discovered this website and have been downloading the free mp3s here in hopes of finding a new band.  I'd often heard of the Italian prog-scene in the 70s but had never heard any of it...except for the Suspiria soundtrack, but that doesn't count.

So I've just ordered Per Un Amico, Storia di un Minuto, & L'isola di niente after listening to a couple tracks.  Can't wait to get the discs.  I've REALLY been digging those couple free tunes.

I'm a newbie to a lot of this stuff.  Been listening to the "prog basics" for about a decade and have finally found somewhere to give some new recommendations.

Good choice for a newcomer to Italian Prog. You won't regret it - all three are excellent.

Premiata Forneria Marconi: Storia di un Minuto is the one I recommend to newcomers

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

If you dont speak Italian or dont want to here some
operatic singer bellow in a foreign language on top
of your prog, then....

Il Volo - Essere, o non essere!
Sensations Fix - Portable Madness
Picchio dal Pozzo - same
Luciano Basso - Voci

------------------------------------------------------
why are most italians in america named TONY?
During WW2 the italian mommas loaded their boys
on boats headed for New York. They hung a sign
around their necks TO NY !
