In all fairness to Queensryche, "Operation Mindcrime" also tells a story,it's definitely a concept album, albeit a bloody awful one.

"Operation: Mindcrime" for me, please - as "Scenes from a Memory" is the biggest heap of spinach Dream Theater have ever recorded. It's just that: an overrated, pretentious, derivative piece of stagnation featuring bits of old DT, Savatage, U2, Kansas, Frank Zappa, Rush, Roger Waters, annoying lyrics and a schmaltzy MOR singer. Thank God they found their energy again and unleashed that fine "Train of Thought" album (derivative as well but ... meaty!).
- Apart from that: Misplaced Childhood of course. And The Wall. And DSOTM and Clutching at Straws (are they concept albums?)

There's such a large catalogue of excellent conceptual albums that I wouldn't vote for any of the two mentioned.
- The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
- 666
- Quadrophenia
- Tales of Mystery and Imagination
- Spartacus
- The War of the Worlds
- Six Wives of Henry the VIII
- Pictures at an Exhibition
- Darwin! (Banco del Mutuo Soccorso)
- Thick as a Brick
- Tales from Topographic Oceans
- Revolutions (Magenta)
- Illusions on a Double Dimple
- Dark Side of the Moon (Well, semi conceptual at least)
- The Wall
- I Robot
- Heaven & Hell (Vangelis)
- Myths and Legends of King Arthur...
- Peter & The Wolf (Brand X plus Bruford, Eno, etc)
- Days of Futire Passed
IMHO the two mentioned are in a minor league.

Among those two I've voted for Scenes - really great album! (The only great album by DT though... IMO).
Operation is also delicious

What a fantastic list! The Lamb is certainly the greatest for me.
I can't really comment on the 2 albums in the poll because I'm not a fan of either
The whole thing about CTTE being a concept album confused me: mind you, Jon Anderson's lyrics are so esoteric it can mean anything you want it to

And Jesus said unto John, "come forth and receive eternal life..."
Unfortunately, John came fifth and was stuck with a toaster.

According to Fish,"Clutching At Straws" is not a concept album. Some of the songs are thematically linked with a thread of alcohol abuse but it's still not a concept album.

Im sure CTTE is not a concept album for one simple reason, Close to the Edge, And You and I and Siberian Khatru are three songe with no relation in the lyrics, a concept album is like a book and the songs are like chapters (Except in One song concept albums like Thick as a Brick), this is not the case of CTTE, as simple as that.
What about Jesus Christ Superstar, Tommy and A Passion Play? |
Good question Emperor, both are amomg my favorites but there's not room enough to list all the great concept albums, and in the case of Tommy and Jesus Christ Superstar I tried to avoid Rock Operas, because IMO they belong to a slightly different genre that includes mostly dialogues instead of lyrics.

OPERATION: MINDCRIME
In my top 5 favorite metal albums of all-time.
Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory is great, but at times too derivative.
Peace & take care

...But it isn't a concept album! Everyone involved in its production has attested to that fact.

Did they? The idea behind it was that a band called "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" would go touring and do a concert. which is what we have on the album. They wanted to have acts, like Mr. Kite and all that, and there is an intro and an outro... I guess in some ways it is and in some ways it isn't, but i like to think it is.

I agree with that, but that's more an excuse for a bunch of songs than
a true concept album. There's no overarching theme or story to it.
For me, one of the greatest concept albums of all time is the
criminally underrated "Captain Lockheed & the Starfighters" by
Robert Calvert. Not really prog, mayhaps, but a damn fine fusion of
great songs, captivating story and hilarious comedy - the result is
something funny, tragic and infuriatingly catchy. I just wish someone
else could've heard of it. *sighs*

Does anyone think that such albums as Tangerine dream 'Rubycon' & 'Pheadra' could be though of as concept albums.
They kinda tell a story in an Electronic field...
More noticeable with Edgar Froese & Klause Shulze early offerings.

Yes, Iván. The Lamb, The Wall, and Quadrophenia are in a major league compared to the two mentioned.

The Lamb for me! Since it's the best album period, it has to be the best concept album.
