Couldn't have said it better myself!
Hmmmmmm....... can I split my vote between "The Kindness Of Strangers" and "Day For Night"?????
Naw, I'll go with "Kindness", as my fav Beard tracks are "The Good Don't Last", In The Mouth Of Madness" and "Cakewalk On Easy Street". All from that album.
"Air raid
sirens in the night again.
Not far away,
I'm failing,
At everything I try to win.
But that's OK.
'Cuz it's a cake walk on Easy Street.
It's a new kind of day."

I have this love-hate relationship with the music and albums of Spocks
Beard. There are bits on all albums that I enjoy, but none match
"Kindness" forits level of originality. I was introduced to their music
with the loan of "Kindness" and then went out and bought it myself.
However, having then gone to find earlier and later recordings, I
realise they peaked with "Kindness" with an album that avoided obvious
lifts from other bands. "Snow" in contrast is the worst. I got
sent the promo by SPV Records (the double edited down to a single CD)
and I have report I found myself listening to that album, and
saying to myself for 40 minutes; here's the Yes bit, now the Gentle
Giant, blimey Deep Purple for change - thinking where they had nicked
the samples from? I had to turn it off in the end, I wasn't enjoying it
as whole (although I have radio-played the Deep Purple tribute a couple
of times!!). Progressive rock ought to progress not retrogress -
however, I'm thankful Spocks Beard do their own playing unlike these
dire manufactured boy or girl pop groups!
I'm afraid Anekdoten have spoilt me, in demonstrating how derivatisation can work towards new sounds.

Hi, guys from ProgArchives. This is my first message in this forum. My favourite SB album is theri second 'Beware of Darkness', which I find the most cohesive in terms of inspired writing and progressive sophistication. I have more than one favourite individual track, but I have to choose onlu one specifically in this moment, that would be "Thoughts" from 'Beware...' (other ones I was thinking of are "The Light", "Go the Way You Go", "Harm's Way", "The Doorway").
Greetings.

Snow!
All tracks on that one being brilliant...I kinda like it as much as I like The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, although the greatness of the lyrics could be argued! Quite depends on what you think about bringing God into music..
My favourite song might be "Gibberish", though, or at least that's the one which made me listen to Spock's Beard in the first place. Darn cool vocals on that one, and a great great song in all ways.

I finally completed the set. I'm suprized no one voted for Day for Night because of Gibberish and Distance to the Sun and some other strong tunes from that one.
I'm going to try to put together a single 80 minute Best of Spock's Beard and it ain't easy, but the two above gotta be on it.
Help me out..... What's your Best Of SB (eighty minutes only)?

I don't get Snow. It's a very annoying album to me. Only 3 strong songs on it. The worst album they made IMO. I have trouble getting through the whole thing (only did that 3 times). There are too many bad pieces on it.
So for a compilation disc you basically just need the best of Kindness of Strangers and V plus a couple of other tracks. Forget the last 2 albums! But this is just my opinion.

Either of Beware of Darkness, Kindness of Strangers and Day for Night. I got Day for Night first and immediately sucked me right in. A lot of people think it sucks though.
If you want to get into SB, I suggest you get the albums in chronological order and avoid the two last ones. On Snow there was too much of Neal and his religiosity. On FE there was no Neal at all, and listening to it I realized that a lot of what I like about the other SB albums came from Neal.
As for favourite track, I have several and couldn't pick just one, but the song that first really got to me was Crack the Big Sky.

Amen to the 'Great Nothing' my brother....V is my fave (so far)
Interesting that nobody has voted for 'The Light' which seems to be the critics choice in the poular press.

Very difficult choice as they are all so damn good, hardly a bad moment. I went for Beware of Darkness though and the Doorway from that album is one of my favourites
