I was just wondering what yalls opinion was of what band I should get every album for, if I were to choose one band to get into.
If there were one and only one band to get every album for then what would it be, I need a new favorite band you know.

Well it's very hard to just pick one band to get into unless you have a favorite style of music.  The progressive rock bands that are a part of this website are similar and very different at the same time.  My favorites include Rush, Yes, Asia, Dream Theater, and probably ELP.  Rush and Dream Theater are more of rock bands but still have that progressive hint in their music.  Yes, Genesis, and ELP are more of what the call art/progressive rock with deeper, more artistic types of music.  I would say Asia is a blend of these styles.  Other people may disagree with me but this may get you started.

Gentle Giant, from their first album to Interview.

It depends. What do you currently listen to? Other than Pink Floyd.

i just wanted a new band to replace my current favorite pink floyd and i wanted jsut one band because i want to go from their first cd to thier last just like i did with floyd.

im not looking for the best band but really the best band that i can go from the first cd to the last, which one would be best at that, i dotn really care wich one plays the best or anything, just a band that has a nice "timeline" to go through and experience, and it would be easier to do this with just one band and not many, that way i can really focus on one at a time and not a whole lot.

I've been getting into the krautrock genre lately, bands like amon duul II, Can, Faust, Neu!

I've also been REALLY digging the band Gnidrolog, check out their album "Lady Lake", It's incredible.

  • Jethro Tull has managed to maintain quality like no other (major/long running) band I've seen, so I'd go with them.  They do blues, elizabethan, folk, hard-rock, full blown prog, and tons of other stuff while maintaining a distinctly Tull sound.

  • Gentle Giant, while somewhat inaccesable, is incredibly rewarding.  Imagine Yes without self-gratuitous solos, and much tighter playing and more adventurous instrumentation.  Excellent band, from their debut till Interview (1976).

Others have beat me to it but I'll back them up:

GENTLE GIANT!

Though you may not want their last two albums that's still 10 albums that all reward a LOT of close attention. They're a brilliant band to get into - casual listening is not enough.

I agree with Dick Heath, these threads really don't result in anything meaningful... Why don't you use the top 100, in your case the psychedelic/space rock top 100 and just choose the first band you're unfamiliar with!

If you're only collecting one band, it's got to be Yes.
