Topic: Best Porcupine Tree album Posted: July 04 2005 at 15:25 |
As someone who was disappointed with their latest "Deadwing" - not sorry I
bought it, just disappointed and hoping it will grow on me - it got me
wondering what this site's visitors think is their best.
Signify for me.

There are two magnificent DVD Audio versions of Deadwing available, I created threads about them a while ago. Actually, I like Deadwing very much ... maybe it's because I'm very much into prog METAL.
I voted for Lightbulb Sun ... In Absentia is even a little better, but Lightbulb Sun is better balanced and offers a good mix of the "old" and "new" Porcupine Tree.

I find its almost impossible to chose a favourite, depending what mood i'm in. I love Tarquins Seaweed Farm it's very experimental and pychedelic with a final track 'The Cross' that sounds like a 60's Floyd. But for personal reasons the most played album of theirs for me is Stupid Dream i adore EVERY track.

Difficult to decide whether I should vote on this as I haven't yet listened to Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream. I'll come back later on this one, though In Absentia and Deadwing are my top two so far.

I was honestly surprised to find myself voting for Lightbulb Sun, as I
love both In Absentia and Deadwing. Lightbulb Sun was my introduction
to PT, and it's still my favorite as of yet.

For me Stupid Dream. I think Pure Narcotic is one of the best tracks that were made in the last decade. And there are more great tracks on it, and the atmosphere is breathtaking.
But I have to be honest: I didn't hear their widely acclaimed In Absentia yet.

Im usually pretty determined not to participate in "best" of anything threads, but this stirred my interest. Mostly because it would be very difficult to pick out a "best" album for PT in any respect, there are so many style changes throughout that a lot of albums become incomparable even(like up the downstair to deadwing, radically different). So for a best id really have to pick one from each era, but even then im not ready to decide which one is better than the other (in the case of in absentia vs. deadwing, in absentia has better songs (except the deadwing title track, perhaps PT best song) but it does not hold together as an album, it feels like a collection of songs. Hard choice). I can however, list two favourites. My two favourite albums by PT are signify and up the downstair. I voted for up the downstair because this brilliant almost trance album has no love so far.

The difficulty is that each album has a uniqueness that defines a particular development of
Porcupine Tree. I think it is hard to vote on best of polls because the
output of a band 3, 5 and 10 years ago should, by defining it prog, be
changing and taking risks so IMO, what you hear in 1996 cannot be
measured along what you hear in 2005. With this band anyway, I just
cannot separate the albums I like.
PT have been consistently putting out quality music since their
inception and my fav albums are Sky Moves Sideways, Stupid Dream,
Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia and Deadwing.
I would like to get Recordings as my next PT purchase.

I didn't vote because I haven't heard all their albums. The ones that I
have heard: The Sky Moves Sideways, Signify, Stupid Dream, Lightbulb
Sun. The Sky Moves Sideways is easily the best one of these. The rest
is awful Oasis-like British pop!

Then my recommendation for you would be to skip In Absentia and Deadwing, and buy the Up The Downstair/Staircase Infinities re-release instead.
