Topic: James LaBrie ... Posted: July 03 2005 at 05:21 |
What do you think?
Edit: I probably should have provided more negative options ... please chose "terrible singer - hate him" if you generally don't like him and don't think that he's a good singer.

Going to get some varied comments about this one Mike.
I think he he is a very good singer who did an excellent job on images
and words, scenes fom a memory and parts of 6 degrees and has redeemed
himself recently on Octavarium after TOT.
I really liked the way he used his voice on the last album and it is probably his best effort yet.
A few people on this forum though think that he is cr*p in comparison
to say Peter Hammill so I guess if they read your poll they might have
something to say about it.

hes got skill, but his tone sounds very dennis deyoung like, which can get annoying...i used to think he was horrible but since then he has kinda growed on me, depends on the mood.

James Labrie... you're going to see every possible answers!
Talentwise, he is a brilliant singer. Frm time to time he tries to do much more than what he should, and tends to try to much for the emotional side of singing. On some songs he's just the perfect fit, but on some other he's just not the best guy for the job. I still don't put him on top of my list, but he's still better than other guys out there! That being said, Dream Theater is still a force in prog and wether you like it or not, it is there! I saw them live with Yes last year, and going back with megadeth on the gigantour. On both occasions, it is not for Dream Theater, but still! It is not like it was Mariah Carey!!

James Labrie is the one that ruins it for me .Somehow it is very difficult for me to listen to his voice, no disrespect though.

My choice is not in the poll.
"He's OK" was a promising start since I place him somewhere in the middle, but then the choice got spoilt with the addition "haven’t heard much of him". I own 10 DT CD's, so I can't honestly say that....

Sorry!
You could also vote for "extraordinary singer" ... after all, there's no other singer who sounds like him!

He's bloody awful, but I don't hate him so I won't vote.
Dream Theater would be far better if they were instrumental because a lot of their lyrics are pretentious crap and his singing voice is the last straw. I actually like some of their instrumental passages. Dennis de Young was no great shakes either; they do sound a bit like each other.

If you want to hear some good work by Labrie outside of Dream Theater besides his solo album and Mullmuzzler check out Frameshift's Unweaving the Rainbow and Tim Donahue's Madmen and Sinners. You might change your mind about him.

He's definitely the weak link in DT. but I guess someone has to sing, so better him than me. he's just so damn cheesy sometimes.

He's OK. Though the only option for such a view on this poll also makes
it sound as though I haven't heard much of him, which I have. I own 4
Dream Theater albums.
