Rush's 'Xanadu' came on Planet Rock the other day. My wife, who is unfamiliar with the vastly over-rated Canadian trio, thought the lyrics were generated by AI! How we laughed...

Best lyrics in prog rock? Probably something from Pink Floyd. Anything from Animals. Echoes, Dark Side. I'll settle for Wish You Were Here.

But the worst lyric goes to one of the best bands in all respects, Jethro Tull.

The Curse.

Young Gladys was a silky maiden
At thirteen, she was going strong, yeah.
Oh, Gladys.
Nicely filled out, fully laden,
But down below there was something wrong, yeah.
Oh, Gladys.
Nobody told her about the secrets
That ladies have to hide
Mom had no words to describe the things
That happened inside.
Need someone to help me,
I feel that there's a curse on me, oh.
Went down into the local disco,
For what used to be the one night, yeah,
Oh Gladys.
Felt a searching hand to frisk her,
Along the legs of the water line, yeah,
Oh Gladys.
Now Gladys knew she was in no condition
In no mood to play
I cracked a knee in her soft spot, nothing
Had got in her way.
I want no one to touch me,
I feel there's a curse on me, oh.
Directed down to the local drugstore
Got fixed up, now she's doing fine, yeah
Oh Gladys
Equipped with various kinds of apparatus
You know the feminine hygiene kind, yeah
Oh Gladys
Must have been a man to do these things
Who won her fall from grace
That day he programmed me
(That lady programmed me?)
You should have seen the smile on his face
He said 'You'll need someone to help you
When you feel like cursing me', oh.

The only thing that scares me, is us putting our heads in the sand and ignore history, and realize that many times, these are not exactly independent comments, not brought out by something else ... and the artistic challenges and changes in the 20th century were all very strong and stood out for many things ... you really think those lyrics are any better/worse than Picasso's Guernica? You can't see the child looking out the window and seeing broken up bodies in the street? ... ok ... I get it ... we're all blind and refuse to accept so many artists have tried to show us ... but we will think that the sugary crap is some kind of a better lyric ...

They are bad lyrics. Even in context, they are bad lyrics. This has nothing to do with all the prattle you just spewed. And if you want context, there are far better black composers who wrote far better black songs about the black experience in America, than some sloppily turgid German prog band. Offhand, I'd say Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, War, and Gil Scott Heron among others. All contextually and historically of the era, all far more profound.

So, to be clear, what the previous poster was saying is that the lyrics are embarrassingly bad. He was not commenting on the social unrest. The song itself is pretty horrible all the way around: the singing in particular is really bad, almost a caricature.
...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...

While I am sure the songwriter had noble intentions, but 'Out of Focus' weren't doing themselves any justice when writing those last two lines, especially considering that the final line is also the name of the song.

Hi,

At the time, they weren't the only ones making incendiary comments about many things. You'll want to watch the film PERFORMANCE, or simply pick up the soundtrack album, and listen to THE LAST POETS ... it was a time for the "Black Power" thing in America, and it's lyrics and moments were not exactly clean or clear with Lysol, just the way we like them!

That things were not any better in Europe is not a surprise, but making this comment some 50+ years later, is very scary ... what happened yesterday is not the same as today, although I don't understand how we can be critical of these lyrics, and ignore RAP these days, when its own lyrics are ... way more lively and scary than the ones we heard 50 years ago, though I am not sure I would want to discuss those differences. Even within "krautrock" there was a lot of political commentary, and not all communes and groupings were exactly free of politics and sticking strictly to keeping the women as subjects for the men ... and not many of those men gave a damn about the emancipation of women, and their advances in Westernized societies, though there still is the same issue in other parts of the world, where women are not "free".

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Sail away, the ship of my life
Take me to the edge of the world
There I'll find my gold
There I'll find my dream
And someday I will return
When the world has changed

From Shangri-La by Druid. Penned by Dane.
Not the most creative lyrics, but this is imo a really effective chorus. It has an "epic" quality to it.

I'll put in a Peter Hamill lyric as well

Quote
I'm just a man, and killers, and angels
All are me
Dictators, saviors, refugees

It's from Man-Erg and defines in one go the duality or multiplicity of man.

A Slow Descent into Reality by Evership features amazing heart wrenching lyrics.

I had arrived in life, no one would disagree
I lived the dream
Behold the wonders, born from deep inside of me
And so it seemed
Come and recognize
The poster child for Human Enterprise

But to my world came the winds of consequence
A compromise
Of friends that riches make had vanished at a glance
Before my eyes
As history has told
Kingdoms rise as easily as they fold

So I climbed my tower high
And I screamed into the sky
And with nothing left, I thought of letting go
Just letting go...

[...]

I used to seek for life in my ambition
But this had left me in a dark condition
And now I see
The creature can't transcend
The nature of the man
The Truth is found where all my strivings end

So I laid my banner down
And I knelt low to the ground
For I knew that it was time for letting go
Just letting go

Interesting
Yesterday a morning came, a smile upon your face
Caesar's palace, morning glory, silly human race,
On a sailing ship to nowhere, leaving any place,
If the summer change to winter, yours is no disgrace

Not the greatest
And we can fly from here
And we can fly from here
And we can drink some beer
And we can have a Happy New Year …

Maybe not the worst lyrics ever by a prog artist, but for Pink Floyd 'A New Machine' has got to be an all time low (for me).

I have always been here
I have always looked out from behind these eyes
It feels like more than a lifetime
Feels like more than a lifetime

Sometimes I get tired of the waiting
Sometimes I get tired of being in here
Is this the way that it's always been?
Could it ever have been different?

Do you ever get tired of the waiting?
Do you ever get tired of being in there?
Don't worry, nobody lives forever
Nobody lives forever

I will always be here
I will always look out from behind these eyes
It's only a lifetime
It's only a lifetime
It's only a lifetime

Is it any wonder that the monkey's confused?

Some of the lyrics, I'm most fond of, are by Peter Hammill and Ian Anderson, like "Killer", "House with no Door", "Aqualung"
and "Cross-eyed Mary".

Steve Hogarth

Best lyric: "I want to be someone who someone would want to be" (Neverland)

Worst lyric: "I had no idea what martyrdom meant until my older brother... my older brother... I'm sorry. I can't continue" (Gaza)

I don't think that anything can get any worse than this.

Oh I need the bathroom
Oh I need the bathroom
Oh keep on fighting
Oh I need the bathroom

And oh it's keeping on
Oh keep on fighting

Oh I need a bathroom
We're 'bout keeping on
Oh keep on fighting
And you keep me on

Then call again to Alaro
Maybe things will change, things tomorrow
And call again - keeping on

Oh I need a bathroom
Oh I need a bathroom
Oh keep on fighting
Oh

And yet it seems tomorrow maybe change things
I don't know if you're right
Oh keep on rocking
Oh keep on fighting
Oh

But this from "Sound And Color - Toltec" is a reference to Castaneda's books

Sound can acknowledge and reveal
The very nature of the body line
Color coexists as a meter to the soul

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

I won't say the lyrics attack "God" regarding Holocaust, as they see the Holocaust as pure human matter - "God" is very probably non-existing here, and at least non-acting in human matters.

I think mentioning the 6 million Jews was quite appropriate for the song because, according to the Bible, Jews were God's chosen people, and yet...

I don't think those lines from the song trivialises the loss of 6 million Jews because those lines actually provides impact to what the song is about. Everybody dies, and wars have been killing people for millennia, but the Holocaust was an occurrence like nothing else in history.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.
